Unique Coffee Tables - Tips to Find Unique Coffee Tables

by David Pope

Trying to find a unique coffee table is always a challenge, isn't it? It's hard enough finding a coffee table you like but finding a unique one is even tougher.
Before searching for a unique coffee table, here are some tips you should think about.
Don't buy one that is too high... as a lot of people want to just be able to bend over slightly to reach for those horderves or drink. Plus, you don't want your husband to strain his back reaching for that remote control or piece of "Friday night pizza".
Also, remember a lot of people like to stretch out their legs on a coffee table so make sure the height is comfortable for you.
As far as size goes, design expert, "Suzanna Salk" says "you want the table to be about half the size of your sofa." But it is pretty much common sense. If you have a small room, choose a small table. If you have a large room, you can choose a larger or very large table.

As far as shape goes, again, Suzanna Salk says that you can't go wrong with a rectangular coffee table and if the couch is soft and rounded, you could go with a circular coffee table. But you can find both round coffee tables and rectangular coffee tables that are unique.
Have kids? Don't get one with sharp ends... or you will spend your days and nights screaming at Junior to stay away from the table. No need for that stress, that's for sure!
A smart move would be to buy one that will last for many years... so solid wood is an excellent choice... and remember... the coffee table is like the "centerpiece" of you home... so you want it to be pretty.
A good idea would be to buy a coffee table with a shelf on the bottom of it. That way, you can put magazines, etc. on the shelf instead of cluttering the top of the coffee table.
Ok, now how do you find a uniqe coffee table? If you want a unique table, you don't want one that is manufactured. Manufactured means there are LOTS of other tables just like it. Personally, I would go for someone who makes handmade tables... out of solid wood. Typically, you could find someone who makes them in your phonebook... or a great way to find one is to check out the Fine Art Shows in your area. Often, there is at least one person who makes furniture there. Even if they don't have one on display, you could ask them to make one for you. Of course, always make sure you see a picture of it before you order one!
