SAFETY FIRST!
Any piece of furniture that is holding a lot of weight can be dangerous. An important safety issue with file cabinets is the danger of tipping and crushing. Large and heavy file drawers can cause the file to tip forward. Therefore, several things can be done to minimize this danger.
1. Do not fill the file on the top drawer while leaving lower drawers empty.
2. As mentioned above, do not open more than one drawer at a time.
3. Attach file cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping.
4. Where possible, put your heaviest items in bottom drawer (to act as an anchor).
5. Do not put attractive nuisances like TV's and games on top of tip prone furniture unless it is properly tethered. Children may climb up to retrieve the remote or turn on the TV with horrible consequences.
CHOOSE A HIGH-QUALITY WOOD FILE CABINET
The lowest quality wood file cabinets are generally made for self-assembly by the customer. This is usually more difficult than you expect and utilizes "cam" assembly hardware. You'll also want to stay away from file cabinets that are made of particleboard. Even though the tag might say it's made of wood, don't be fooled because that description might still be referring to particleboard, so beware. According to the Furniture Manufacturers Association, solid wood includes particleboard. What you really want to look for is SOLID wood-either solid oak, pine, or cherry.
Another thing to keep in mind is that in order to hold a lot of weight a file cabinet should have glue screws and clamps--not cam locks in particleboard.
Next, know the difference between printed grain, genuine wood veneer, and solid wood without particleboard. The easiest way to tell if a piece of furniture is made of solid wood is to look at how the grain is running. If the end grain runs the wrong direction (perpendicular to the other grain), it is most likely veneer. I'm not saying veneer doesn't have its place if properly done, however, you should not be misled and be able to purchase what you are looking for/know what you're looking at.
Wood drawers are best made with English Dovetailed joints. If a drawer is assembled with cams, it won't hold together. A drawer glued and stapled can be an acceptable assembly method if the staples are only holding the assembly together until the glue dries.
Another important element of a file cabinet is the hardware used to open the drawers. Check the runner system. Make sure it pulls out smoothly and evenly? How does the tracking system work? If the drawer pulls out less than 90%, you will loose storage space and it will be difficult to retrieve your documents from the back of the file. Euro type roller glides are unacceptable for any file cabinets. This type of roller system works with two interlocking wheels on a spindle and it can't take the heavy weight of a file drawer and will likely not last very long at all. The better glide system for file cabinets is a full ball bearing--full extension slide system with at least a 100 lb weight rating.
Also, consider whether or not you want to lock up your drawers. You can put a lock on each individual drawer. This is the easiest way to lock up any particular drawer from which you want to keep prying eyes. You can also lock up all the doors by using a key just on the top drawer and the mechanism will lock all the doors below. Interlocking systems on quality wood files can be a costly and sometimes can hang-up creating access problems.
The wise consumer will take all these pointers into consideration when selecting a wood file cabinet. If you stick to solid wood and good glides and stay away from self-assembly, you'll have good access to your files and your cabinet will last a very long time.

How To Build A Modern Bed D-I-Y Style

Well with all the modern bed out there in the market, it's like it pushes you to do more. Give it an edge, like, why not build your own. So what are the things to consider when you want to build a modern bed yourself? The design, it is probably the most important thing to consider on the project. This is where you should spend a good deal of time. There are a lot of things that go into the design process, including, but not limited to: the space your bed goes into, your budget, your handyman skills, and green products or not. You get the point. This particular project shown above was for a good friend. The budget was around $300, the space was small, and I was fairly handy and had access to quite a few tools. It can get a little bit higher if you consider doing a better design on it.
You have to know and consider that the actual bed is two separate parts, the top, and the base. We'll start with the base. Try to make the skeleton out of cheap 1/2" plywood. It eventually got covered with the nice walnut as show in the picture above. The base was made out of 4 separate pieces that were bolted together. Try to maximize portability in case they ever moved and wanted to break it down into small parts. The main thing to consider is to be flexible and know the basis of the parts that you are doing, so that the idea on it will be good in terms of re-modeling it in the future or once you try to move the furniture out, it'll be rather easy to fix it up.

If you look closely the top didn't get the mitered 45 degree corners the base got. It was just a 90 degree but joint, which doesn't look quite as nice, but it makes putting the finished walnut on a lot easier. Then try to make it out of four different parts with the base which was then bolted together. Do this for the sake of portability in the future. The overall dimensions of the top are about 6" wider per side, and at the bottom to get the overhang I wanted. It sits flush at the top of the bed to save space in the room. The measurements however are important so you have to be knowledgeable on it as well. The portability of the bed should also be considered in this portion.
Next is probably the hardest part, using walnut ply cover everything that will be seen. This means using mitered edges where all the plywood joints meet. Try to use a tablesaw with the blade at a 45 degree angle, but you could use a circular saw with a straight edge clamped to the plywood. Take your time and think about everything three times before you cut. The spaces in the middle of the bed try to span it with multiple 1x4 pine slats. To finish it use water based minwax polyurethane. Put a coat on, sand with 600 grit sand papers, repeat x 3. On your last coat sand with 1200 grit sandpaper for the glassy finish. Then you're all done, Modern bed of your own design is finished. Let it be known that making one is not easy and sometimes expensive, but the thought of building it yourself gives you the satisfaction and pride that it is your own creation.

Before you know it, your cushions have gathered a plethora of stains and marks, as well as their own tiny ecosystem of flora! Thankfully, cleaning stains off of patio cushions is really very simple, once you know how.
How you clean them depends, partly, on what your particular cushions are made of. Most can be maintained and cleaned regularly with a mild mixture of warm water and liquid soap. For the smaller weaves; such as woven cushions, olefin, or marquesa blends; a mild laundry detergent and water can be used. Just spray your soap and water mixture onto the cushions and scrub with a damp sponge. The cushions can then be rinsed off with a garden hose.
For more stubborn stains and for cases of mildew growth, most patio cushions can be treated with a mixture of one cup bleach to a gallon of water. Be sure to check the care labels on your cushions before using bleach, but you will generally find it is safe to use without damaging the fabric or the color. If you no longer have the tags, spot test the bleach mixture on a small section of fabric. Polyester cushions may be faded or damaged by bleach, but others stand up well to this treatment. Spray the mix on with a household spray bottle and scrub lightly with a sponge or brush. Be sure to rinse the cushions thoroughly with clean water after using bleach or any other cleaning solution.

To avoid long term staining and to lengthen the life of your patio cushions, try to avoid getting suntan lotions and oils directly onto the fabric. When you go out to tan, take a towel and use it to cover and protect your cushions. The chemicals and oils in tanning products will shorten the life of your cushions and leave dark, oily stains over time. If you do get suntan lotion or tanning oil on your cushions, clean it quickly with a mix of warm water and mild soap or detergent to avoid letting it soak in. It will only take you a few seconds and will save you a lot of hard scrubbing later on.
To maintain the look and comfort of your cushions, try to give them a good soap and water rinse at least once a month and a thorough rinsing with the hose. During harsh weather and the colder months, when you won't be using your cushions and they are at the most risk for damage, bring your cushions inside or cover them up. You will be glad you did.
Just a little bit of care and maintenance and a touch of prevention are all it takes to assure that your patio cushions stay looking brand new for years to come. Ever since I was a child, I have adored canopy beds. Growing up, my parents had a great wrought iron bed that I still think of with great fondness. Wood frames are great because they weigh less, are more gentle to your floor, and are more forgiving when you run into them. A bed frame made of wood might be easier on your legs if you are prone to bumping into your bed when getting in or out.

Ready to start relaxing in a serious summertime, Jimmy Buffett fashion? I'm not talking about Margarita's, although they would definitely add a little flavor to this whole summer thing. Rather, I'm talking about hammocks.
That's right...it's Hammock Time. Stop! Hammock time! Maybe that is more like MC Hammock and not Jimmy Buffett, but I digress.
If you truly want to get some relaxing enjoyment out of the summer, it is imperative that you get a hammock to nap, siesta, and enjoy the warmth of the sun.
Three of my favorites are brought to you by Sams Club or Wal-Mart (Don't judge me!-Wal-Mart's everywhere). Included among the plethora of hammocks are the hammock with stand (around $150) and the less expensive portable hammock (around $60).
Make sure you've got 10' of patio space for these puppies, string them up, and relax. It's as easy as that.
If you don't have 10' of patio space though, try the one person hammock chair or buy two for you and a friend. They are loads of fun and you'll feel like a 3-year-old-at-naptime-plus they are the cutest things since puppies.

One very important thing to remember if you are getting a hammock that must be attached to walls or railing though, you should double check with your apartment management to make sure that hammocks are allowed.

According to the Sleep Council, most of us are sleeping in a bed that's too small. 75 % of double beds sold are still the standard size: 4' 6" x 6' 3" (135 x 190cm), yet men and women in the UK are getting taller. Each generation is on average 0.75 inches taller than the last, which means that within the next 50 years, the average man is likely to be 6 foot tall. The Sleep Council recommends that since we don't sleep with our heads right up against the head board, we should choose a bed that's at least 6in (15cm) taller than the tallest person sleeping in it. If you or your partner are above average height, even upgrading to a 5' x 6' 6" (150 x 200cm) king size could make a dramatic difference to your night's sleep while taking up very little extra space in your bedroom. Since sleep plays such an important role in our lives it's not surprising that beds feature prominently in many myths, fairy tales and other works of literature.
When we imagine the bed in a fairytale like Sleeping Beauty, we inevitably conjure up images of a huge palace chamber and an ornate mahogany four-poster bed draped with beautiful silken fabrics.
However, the characters in the ancient tales don't always sleep in a traditional bed, or even in a bedroom. Morpheus, the Greek god of sleep and dreams, slept in a bed made of ebony in his dimly lit Cave of Sleep. Forest elves make their leafy beds high in the treetops. And a vampire's resting place of choice is, of course, a coffin. It seems when it comes to beds and sleeping in stories, one size doesn't suit all...
Beds to fit everyone
If you've spent the night tossing and turning on an uncomfortable bed, you'll know how important it is to have a mattress of the right firmness. Goldilocks certainly appreciated this when she ventured into the house of the Three Bears. After tasting the porridge and sitting on all the chairs, she wandered upstairs to try out the beds. While Father Bear's bed was too hard and Mother Bear's bed too soft for her liking, Baby Bear's was just right and she was able to nod off straightaway.
Even more particular was the fairytale princess who endured a sleepless night because she could feel a pea underneath twenty mattresses and twenty layers of feather quilts. Her extreme sensitivity showed her to be of truly royal blood, and so she passed the Queen Mother's test and won the hand of the prince. They lived happily ever after, as usual, although you have to wonder how easy she was to share a bed with!

A more gruesome bed-related story can be found in the Greek myth of Procrustes. A sadistic bandit who lived in the hills near Athens, Procrustes would invite unwary travellers to lie down on his iron bed. If the traveller was too tall for the bed, Procrustes would chop his body until it was the right length. Victims who were too short would be stretched out on a rack.
The bed itself was adjustable and Procrustes would alter it as he saw people approaching to make sure it was never a perfect fit. Procrustes' evil deeds were finally stopped by the hero Theseus, who placed Procrustes on his own bed and cut off his head and feet. Today the expression 'a Procrustean bed' means an apparently arbitrary standard to which one is forced to conform.
Falling into an enchanted sleep is common in fairy tales and myths, but sometimes beds themselves can be transformed into magical objects. According to Arthurian legend, the wizard Merlin created an enchanted bed that drove everyone who slept in it out of his or her wits. Only the brave Sir Lancelot could resist the spell. More recently, in Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the children travel to London on a bed that can fly, thanks to a magic bedknob.
Sayings and superstitions about beds
Beds are the subject of a number of traditional sayings or expressions. 'A bed of roses,' for example, comes from Christopher Marlowe's 1599 poem, The Passionate Shepherd to his Love, in which he declares, 'And I will make thee beds of roses/And a thousand fragrant posies/A cap of flowers and a kirtle/Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle.' While Marlow had real roses in mind, the expression is used these days to refer to an unrealistic expectation of something being pleasant and easy, eg: 'Marriage isn't a bed of roses.' Saying 'he must have got out on the wrong side of bed' about someone who's been grumpy all day dates back to the ancient Romans, who believed that the left side was unlucky and that to get out on the left of your bed would bring you bad luck.
Other old superstitions suggest that it's bad luck to put a hat on a bed, that a bed facing north or south will bring you misfortune, and that interrupting bed-making results in a restless night's sleep. You should never place a bed with the bottom facing the door, since this symbolises the way you will be carried out (feet first) after your death. Finally, if you're single and you start making a bedspread or quilt, make sure you finish it, or according to folklore you'll never get to share your bed with anyone...

Ruskin's ideals regarding the "division of labour" were especially influential on the Arts & Crafts founder, William Morris. Ruskin believed that unequal labor distribution deeply affected the poor emotionally. In the 1800's, William Morris was an influential English writer, a socialist reformer, an artist, a printer, and designer. (later renamed Morris & Co.), where they created furniture, carvings, fabric, tapestries, stained glass, and wallpaper. Inspired by Ruskin, they created products that didn't undermine the skill of the craftsman.

In the late 1890's, the Arts & Crafts movement made its way to America. The 1896 death of William Morris signaled the end of the Arts & Crafts movement in England but indicated the beginning of the movement in America. A meeting was held in Boston where influential architects, designers, and educators gathered and were determined to bring over the design reform set forth by William Morris in Britain. In the first Arts & Crafts exhibition in 1897, craftsmen, consumers, and manufacturers realized this movement's potential and soon embraced it, beginning in Boston. The next year, several craftsman guilds and societies sprung up and also in 1898, Gustav Stickley founded Gustav Stickley & Co. in Syracuse, New York. It was his simple, geometric designs that defined the American Arts & Crafts movement.
Stickley was a firm believer in the movement's ideals and he expressed his dedication with furniture and home designs. In 1901, he began to showcase his designs and the ideals of the movement through the publishing of The Craftsman magazine, which ran from October 1901 to December 1916. His publication spread the philosophy of the English Arts & Crafts movement but eventually his writing evolved to reflect the voice of the American movement. As America evolved from farm living to city life, many people found that the Craftsman style reflected a rural country life that few people experienced. Yes, as sad as it is, there will always be those amongst us who feel the need to misrepresent antiques for personal gain by selling copies or replicas. Another great way to help identify the validity of an antique or hand-made piece of furniture would be to look closely for nicks and cuts on the back, sides and bottom of the draw. Nicks and cuts usually indicate a hand operated tool was used to plane, shave or cut the wood. Straight cuts, the kind you'd get from a straight saw, are also good signs whereas cuts that look circular in appearance mean that the cut was made with a circular saw, again not in use until after 1860.
3. Exact Symmetry? No way!
This is probably the easiest tell tale sign of machine made furniture compared to hand made. If something looks exactly symmetrical, chances are its been cut by machines, so make sure you request lots of pictures of the piece of furniture you're buying.
4. Ask for a Detailed Description of the Finish
The style of finish is also a great way of identifying the age of a piece of Louis XV. Certain finishes were in use in different periods which is an excellent way to identify the age of your antique furniture. For Louis XV, it should all be hand painted. In the 1800's, William Morris was an influential English writer, a socialist reformer, an artist, a printer, and designer. Morris hoped to revive tapestry weaving as a fine art, along with the hand printing of books, furniture-making and other crafts. In 1861, he founded Morris & Co., which was made up of decorators, architects, and artists. This group created the first reclining chair for Morris, and named it the Morris chair, an item that has remained popular to this day.
He was born in Walthamstow, Essex on March 24, 1834. After graduating from Exeter College in Oxford, Morris originally intended to take religious orders, but after readings criticisms by socialists Thomas Carlyle, Charles Kingsley and John Ruskin, he reconsidered joining the Church and instead devoted his life to art.
In the 1860's, Morris decided to focus on the decorative arts. His designing career began when he decorated the Red House in Bexleyheath, which was built for him by architect, Phillip Web. This successful venture led to the formation of the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later renamed Morris & Co.), where they created furniture, carvings, fabric, tapestries, stained glass, and wallpaper. This company was best known for its stained glass which can be found in churches throughout Britain. The first Morris Chair was not designed by William Morris, but was created by Morris & Co. around 1866. It featured ebonized oak with cushioned armrests and spindles that looked more like strings of beads.

The design of a Morris Chair features a seat with a reclining back and high armrests, which give the chair an authentic look. Many modifications have been made to the original design since it's introduction until this day. While the first design looked to have more of a Victorian influence, it is best known as part of the Arts & Crafts style. This is due to the revisions made by Gustav Stickley who later updated and further popularized the design. William Morris entered national politics in 1876. His first position was as a treasurer of the Eastern Question Association and then also held the same position under the National Liberal League and the Radical Union. After becoming disillusioned with the Liberals, Morris joined the Socialist Democratic Federation. However, after disagreeing with the leader, H.M. Hyndman, he formed the Socialist League and later the Hammersmith Socialist Society. He became a very active propagandist for the socialist cause, giving hundreds of lectures and speeches throughout the country. After the socialist movement died down, his organization was passed onto a group of anarchists and Morris formally withdrew in 1890.
Morris then went on to produce improved printing and book design when he founded the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith, London in 1891. From the selection of paper and ink to his overall integration of type and decorations on a page, his traditional methods of printing and craftsmanship also ran in line with the Arts & Crafts movement. His Kelmscott House in Hammersmith was his last home. Morris died there on October 3, 1896.
To this day, the ideas and work of William Morris are actively being preserved by Morris Societies in Britain, the U.S. and Canada. Your body may enter here, but your mind will remain transfixed with the exotic ambiance of Moroccan decor. Co-workers greet you with bowed heads and grave countenances; and you realize that many of them will live their entire lives without ever having glimpsed the subtle beauty of Moroccan furniture.
Entering the board room, you take your seat at an elongated table. The faces around you look bored. For them, all tables are rectangular-- or square. They have never seen a hexagonal table with fascinating Moorish designs and a hand-carved facade; that much is clear from their expressions. On your own face, there is a look of total contentment. The Moroccan furniture has pulled you through the worst of another day, thanks to your own sense of style and taste. Now you are curled up in your favorite ottoman, sipping your bowl of harira soup. Many of today's latex and foam mattresses require special foundations in order to work with certain bed systems. The most popular of these mattresses are latex or memory foam mattresses. Often times the manufacturers of these mattresses tell you that you'll void the warranty if you don't use proper support for their mattresses. This can make shopping for a new bed somewhat challenging at times but there are things you can do to make it easier in finding the bed you like and making it work with your memory foam mattress. In this article we'll look at some of the many alternatives that exist that can help you in providing the proper support for your mattress and at the same time give you a bed that is both pleasing to look at and functional with modern mattresses.
A large majority of platform beds use a system of slats which make up the foundation of the bed system. This works well with mattresses that use a lot of batting be it cotton or cotton polyester as this helps to promote air flow. This in turn helps to keep moisture from collecting in the batting and improves the life of the mattress. However slat systems don't work so well with brands of mattresses which require a solid foundation so you'll need to make some minor modifications to use your existing bed or beds you're thinking about purchasing to make it work.

One option would be to use a ¼" sheet of plyboard over the existing set of slats. This covers the gaps between the slats and the slats beneath the plyboard will have trouble supporting the plyboard. The thin nature of ¼" should also help to hide it between the mattress and slats so that it isn't visible. It's best to measure the inside length and width of your bedframe where the mattress rests and subtract 1-2" from each dimension to be sure that the piece of plyboard you are cutting will fit correctly over the slats and won't hang over any edges. If you're worried about movement you can find non-slip material in most major hardware stores and home stores. It's the same material used in kitchen cabinets and under rugs to keep things from moving around.
Another option you can do is purchase a second set of slats. This option would give you maximum strength and support for almost any mattress and the extra set of slats can be placed in the gaps between the existing gaps to effectively fill in the foundation to be more solid. Because many slats systems are banded this may require you to purchase for a second set of slats that are unbanded which will allow you to place the slats more independently of each other between the slat system already in place.
In this article we've looked for ways to make existing platform bed systems comply with warranty requirements of mattresses which require a solid foundation. A few of the ideas presented here are just some of the many ways you can modify your existing bed system to work with your latex or memory foam mattress. One suggestion we presented here was using a ¼" of plyboard over existing slats to help form a solid foundation without gaps for your mattress. The other idea was to use a second set of slats and place them in between the existing slat system to fill in the gaps and make the foundation more solid. Always check with your mattress manufacturer to see what the warranty requirements are for your mattress to make sure that your bed's foundation will work with the type of mattress you are using. The ideas presented in this article will hopefully give you an excellent starting point in converting your existing bed system into one that will work with your new foam mattress.

Alvar Aalto - A Master of Timeless Design

Alvar Aalto was born in Kuortane, Finland in 1908, and he lived until 1976. He was a renowned Finnish architect and designer of furniture. His studies led him to architectural school in Helskini, where he graduated in 1921. However, his career did not begin well in Helskini, and so he moved on to a smaller town to start an office and begin his career.
His wife, Aino, was originally hired as his assistant. She was a young woman who designed glass and furniture. Later, they had two children. In the 1920's and 1930's, Alvar Aalto designed several well know landmarks in Finland. In the late 1940's, he taught at MIT. Some of his most well known furniture includes a variety of table designs and lamps.
Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl founded a company named Artek to design furniture. Alvar Aalto designed several classic Aalto furniture (Aalto möbler) including tables, desks, side chairs, lounge chairs, stools, armchairs and children's furniture. Alvar Aalto designed his first lamps as a student in the university of technology in Helsinki where he won a lighting competition in 1920. The name Aalto is still highly regarded in the world of lighting and lamps as he designed several classic lamp models that are considered as modern today as when he designed them.

Before he even graduated, Alvar Aalto began designing his first furniture. Once in his new architecture office, he received a huge order to design furniture for six churches in Finland. He designed the well known Paimio Sanatorium in 1929. He also designed each piece of furniture in the structure, as well as the lamps. For each structure he designed, he also designed custom "Aalto tables" and other furniture for it.
Alvar Aalto was a very talented person. He designed his first furniture when he was in college only. He opened his office and was able to bag an order to design furniture for six churches of Finland. Widely known Paimio Sanatorium including its furniture and lamps was also designed by him. He designed particular table that became popular as Aalto tables. He designed complete furniture of all his office buildings.
The Father of Modernism in the Nordic countries, Alvar Aalto referred to his style as "Organic Functionalism". He has left a significant impact on the furniture design and architecture fields. He and his wife also designed some well known glassware, including the Aalto Vase. The final compliment he received was the introduction of the Alvar Aalto Medal by the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Finnish Association of Architects. If the table has a sinuous cabriole leg, look for a chair with the same line in the leg or back, or choose upholstery with swirls on it. If the table is square or rectangular, look for chairs with a square or rectangular seat but a dining table set with curvy edges and quadrilateral corners include additional sophistication to the style. A round table that's big enough to seat 10 probably won't fit in your dining room, and opposing guests will be so far away it will defeat the whole purpose of buying a round table.

To figure out how many people you'll be able to seat around a given table, allot 24 inches in width for each diner.
Style: Let architecture of the house decor and the other elements in the room dictate the style of dining table you choose. If the atmosphere is traditional, a traditional table will usually look best; if it's contemporary, go with a contemporary table. If you're buying a wooden table, select a wood that appears in the architecture or in another piece of furniture in the room, so the table will feel like a cohesive element in the home's decor. If you're going with a painted piece, repeat the color in the walls or other items in the room.

If you're buying an old farmhouse table or similarly rustic piece, check the height to make sure it's suitable for dining (29-30 inches is standard), and try sitting at the table with the dining chairs you plan to use. (Some old tables have aprons that hang down from the top, making it hard to slide your legs underneath.)
