Add Class To Your Bedroom With Canopy Bed Frames

by Lee Dobbins

Ever since I was a child, I have adored canopy beds. Growing up, my parents had a great wrought iron bed that I still think of with great fondness. It wasn't a canopy bed frame originally, but it had enough height for a canopy to hang properly from it. When mom and dad went out, we liked to make a secret hideaway using sheets and blankets flung over the top of the bed. Under the covers as children we would pretend to be in a fort. Which is why ever since I have loved a nice canopy bed frame. The thing I love is how the canopy gives you an overwhelming feeling of being safe and warm, protected from all the bad things in the world around you.
You can have a canopy bed with all sorts of different bed frames. Although there are many wonderful styles to choose from, I personally prefer the wrought iron bed frames. I love the heavy look and strength. However, I have seen many quality wooden frames that have a very chic appearance. Wood frames are great because they weigh less, are more gentle to your floor, and are more forgiving when you run into them. A bed frame made of wood might be easier on your legs if you are prone to bumping into your bed when getting in or out.

While you browse local stores for canopy bed frames, consider the height of the canopy as well as overall aesthetic appeal. How tall your ceiling is, along with your own personal preferences, will largely determine the height of you bed. When it comes to a canopy, some people prefer it to be at its maximum height. Others enjoy sleeping in canopy beds sporting lower canopies, because it provides a greater degree of intimacy. When a canopy bed is too low, I really don't like it. When the canopy does not allow enough air inside the bed, it can become stifling. Some people actually like this though. Consider trying out as many beds as you'd like before making your final selection.
Antique canopy bed frames are as unique as you are, so look around for one you love. A quality bed that stands the test of time often stays in a family for generations. Many generations of a family can enjoy the same wrought iron bed frame or a wooden bed frame. Beds from different historical periods can be purchased at your local antique store.

Hammocks Can Make Your Summer Magnificent

by Jeff Swett

Ready to start relaxing in a serious summertime, Jimmy Buffett fashion? I'm not talking about Margarita's, although they would definitely add a little flavor to this whole summer thing. Rather, I'm talking about hammocks.
That's right...it's Hammock Time. Stop! Hammock time! Maybe that is more like MC Hammock and not Jimmy Buffett, but I digress.
If you truly want to get some relaxing enjoyment out of the summer, it is imperative that you get a hammock to nap, siesta, and enjoy the warmth of the sun.
Three of my favorites are brought to you by Sams Club or Wal-Mart (Don't judge me!-Wal-Mart's everywhere). Included among the plethora of hammocks are the hammock with stand (around $150) and the less expensive portable hammock (around $60).
Make sure you've got 10' of patio space for these puppies, string them up, and relax. It's as easy as that.
If you don't have 10' of patio space though, try the one person hammock chair or buy two for you and a friend. They are loads of fun and you'll feel like a 3-year-old-at-naptime-plus they are the cutest things since puppies.

One very important thing to remember if you are getting a hammock that must be attached to walls or railing though, you should double check with your apartment management to make sure that hammocks are allowed.
So get out there, start enjoying the sun in a hammock, and why not, add the margarita too!

Country Living With Wood Console Tables

by Ankur Kharbanda

The wooden console table often forms the centerpiece of 'country living' as I am sure that most of you would already know. Wooden furniture and similar furniture often form the backdrop of most of the country style houses. Plastic do not come into play at these settings. Wooden furniture is generally used to a large extent in most of the country houses as there is a need for furniture to be sturdy and one that does nto break at the slightest sign of pressure or stress. Take for example, the wooden console tale, as it is the console table would also at times form the function of the side tray and there are times when it would be required to carry a heavy load on it. One cannot expect a plastic table to carry the same load without buckling under due pressure. Which is why the wooden console table as well as other similar wooden furniture form the main backbone as far as 'country living' goes by.

The neat thing about wooden console tables is that one can get them with any engravings that one wants or just get them plain. In addition, such console tables, chairs and dining tables can all be color coordinated to the room according to the drapes and the color of the room. Of course, one can paint over the furniture, but it is always a good idea to keep the natural color of such furniture and you can vary between the light and the dark tones of the wood and use that for color co-ordination. The thing about the wooden furniture is that in spite of all the protection that one has to provide them to protect them from water damage and all that, they certainly bring this old world charm and none more so than the console table. Of all the furniture settings that one can adapt to most of the natural decors, the wooden console table is one of the best. It can literally adapt to any of the settings no matter what time period the room is made out in, be it Victorian theme or anything else.
Naturally where there is wood, there is always the danger of termites, but this can easily be handled with the right amount of protection. With wooden furniture especially console tables, it is always a good idea to use the varnish as the varnish literally can make the console table and other furniture glow with an inner light and in addition offer then the much needed protection from water damage. The wooden furniture and the console table performs the perfect setting to ones home and they often are the best furniture that one can choose if one wants ones room or ones house to be in a 'country living' style.

Finding the Right Bed for Your Size

by Leigh A. Matelas

In 1988, sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski discovered that trading in your old bed for a new, more comfortable one could give you an average of 42 minutes extra sleep -four times as effective as a typical over-the-counter sleep remedy. So if you're feeling cramped in your sleeping space, or you're tossing and turning on an uncomfortable mattress, one of the most important things you can do for your health is to invest in a new bed.
Choosing a bed for a tall person
According to the Sleep Council, most of us are sleeping in a bed that's too small. 75 % of double beds sold are still the standard size: 4' 6" x 6' 3" (135 x 190cm), yet men and women in the UK are getting taller. Each generation is on average 0.75 inches taller than the last, which means that within the next 50 years, the average man is likely to be 6 foot tall. The Sleep Council recommends that since we don't sleep with our heads right up against the head board, we should choose a bed that's at least 6in (15cm) taller than the tallest person sleeping in it. If you or your partner are above average height, even upgrading to a 5' x 6' 6" (150 x 200cm) king size could make a dramatic difference to your night's sleep while taking up very little extra space in your bedroom. And at 6' x 6' 6" (180 x 200cm), a super king size should give most tall people the extra length they need. If you're very tall, an alternative is to consider a custom made bed. While this will be more expensive, the advantage is that the bed can be designed to your exact specifications to suit you and your home.
Choosing a mattress for a heavy person
If you or your partner is heavy, a standard double bed probably won't be wide enough for you to sleep comfortably without disturbing each other. Like tall people, you'll benefit from a king- or super king-sized bed to give you that extra room. However, a further difficulty for heavier people is that when you sleep on a conventional innerspring, air, or foam mattress, your body weight pulls you down.

As the compressed air or springs push back, your skin and blood vessels are squeezed between the force of your weight and the upwards force of the mattress. This causes pressure points, which constrict circulation in areas like the shoulder blades, buttocks, head, heels, hips or elbows. Pressure points can result in numbness, stiffness and pain and lead to a restless and unsatisfying night's sleep. The heavier you are, the more likely this is to be a problem. An overweight person needs a firm and supportive mattress made of a higher density material such as memory foam to relieve pressure and ensure restful sleep. Memory foam, or visco-elastic foam, was originally developed by NASA to ease the pressure of extreme G-force on astronauts. A memory foam mattress moulds perfectly to the unique shape of your body, providing excellent support and reducing pressure points. A memory foam mattress can reduce your need to toss and turn during the night by up to 80 %, resulting in a much deeper, more restful sleep. It is also very durable and will continue to provide comfort and support for around 15 years.
Finding the perfect bed for you
When choosing a new bed or mattress, make sure both you and your partner visit the showroom together. Don't be afraid to try out a number of beds by lying on them to find the one that's most comfortable. It's worth investing time into finding the right bed, as a good night's sleep makes so much difference to your health and well-being. Remember that the level of firmness or softness that suits you best is a personal choice, so never let a salesman talk you into buying anything that doesn't feel right. Once you've got your ideal bed, make sure your bedding and bed linen fit perfectly too. If your covers are too large for your bed, they can easily slip and slide off. If they're too small, they won't cover you properly and you'll wake up cold. Most department stores carry a good range of bed linen sizes; however, you can also find specialist firms who will make custom-sized bed linen for you.

Sofa Tables - The Making of a Masterpiece

by Jennifer Akre

Sofa tables are regarded as prime necessity and are common pieces of accent furniture for all homes. But, the sofa tables we know today come from a long history of development.
Sofa tables began appearing around the seventeen hundreds, and like settees, they were known for their high features. Their popularity spread among all classes of people.
In many rooms at that time, sofas and sofa tables were paired with fireplaces. A fireplace was often considered the center and focus of a common room. Sometimes, they would be placed near the hearth or fireplace with chairs so those in the room could take advantage of the warmth of the fire.
For some time after this, sofa tables made a move, to the wall. They were pushed back, away from sight, between the wall and the back of the sofa. It was during this time that their design and style took a dip. No longer was it important for them to be icons of beauty, as no one would see them.
Then, thankfully for sofa tables, there was another shift. Nowadays, they are just as commonly located in the centre of the room or near the fireplace are they are up against a wall.
So just what are sofa tables?
They are loosely defined as any table near a sofa and were considered to a number of different tables. As we know, a sofa table is generally found at the back of the sofa these days. Modern ones serve more as a decorative piece, usually having a narrow and long appearance. They usually are available in various styles from contemporary to baroque.

The sofa tables which originated during the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds were very much intentional. The upholstered sofa did not appear at that time as we can see today. The settee was the standard before that period, which would be paired with a sofa table.
As the Industrial Revolution began to pick up speed in the late eighteen century, weaving of fabrics changed dramatically. The fabric weaving quickly moved from a cottage industry to mass production. Eventually, the cost for fabric dropped and new uses for it grew. It was in this time when the settee was replaced by the fully upholstered couch, or sofa. This is when they became less important, and were pushed to the wall.
The best table, which epitomizes the early history of sofa tables, is the Pembroke table. The designs of various tables that are being used today had their genesis in the Pembroke style. The main characteristic of Pembroke table was a drop leaf section, which could be a single leaf or two. There are some other features too, for distinguishing Pembroke tables from other tables. The Pembroke tables usually have a drawer and often have two drawers. The tabletop of the Pembroke takes a rectangular shape with its leaves in down position. Many of those features have held through time and are those that are much coveted with this furnishing to this today.

Background For The Furniture

by Matthew Sorrow

Walls inside our homes are usually only a background for our furniture. But it doesn't have to be that way and in this season it shouldn't. This time modern houses are having flower, animal or plant ornaments on their walls that make a unique separate design on their own!
This season we observe having something left from the style in interior decor when popular were shiny furniture in geometric shapes and usually in intent colours. The trend might be similar but the range of equipment we can use to make our room sparkling are much more accessible and more wider. We can choose freely from many different paintings, wallpapers, or even types of plaster.
But being more specific: what is really in fashion this year in home decor? This season the designers are recommending dark colours for the walls as similar to the natural colours of the ground. For those who are very brave home owners there are options for having walls in very dark grey, brown or green. The colours of the ground might be break down by violet, crimnet, brick red.
The general rule is that we are not avoiding colours, specially intensive ones. Also those which might seem unusual to decor our walls as for example black. And the structure of the wall might also not be traditionally smooth. Nice looking would be the one with grooves or even little bumps. But all done with regular simplicity.

Cause even using those colours we can't mix them freely. We should rather decide on one particular colour and in this one have all our home accessories, gadgets, wallpapers, carpets. To break down the monochromatic dictatorship we can have one of our walls in different colour or wallpaper with big flower ornaments or flourishes ones. The ornaments should be big and visible but placed regular. The same emblem might be repeated on the carpets, mats, upholstery.
Most inspirations we are taking from the Orient. Mostly in colours and ornaments. Dark, black, grey, green and navy blue walls we complete with golden and silver stripes, flowers, and other shining elements. Smooth obscure in some way walls we are comparing with light or lighter elements. This makes a regular and original composition really modern.
So this year home decor is much about walls, dark wallpapers, and interior home accessories with floral ornaments. Those ornaments can be also shown in front of the house - not only as spring flowers in the garden but also as a spring door wreaths at your dark navy doors.

Indoor Benches - Perfect for Family Summer Gatherings

by Jennifer Akre

Summer time is a great time to plan family gatherings. It is fun to have those gatherings outside, however, sometimes you are forced to move the festivities inside. If the weather is too hot, or it starts raining, everyone will be looking for a safe place, indoors. If you live in the south, having a backup plan to summer activities is a must.
When moving a family gathering inside, seating can quickly become an issue. Sure, you can go out and rent some folding chairs but how good does that look? Instead, you may want to buy indoor benches. Benches are more practical than folding chairs and much more attractive.
In addition, having a few indoor benches will provide more seating than a few folding chairs. Depending on what type of benches you purchase, some can be stacked and put away when they are not needed.
Indoor benches come in many different styles, colors and sizes. If your indoor benches will always be a part of your home décor, you can choose indoor benches that are attractive, such as ones made of wicker and rattan. There are also wood and plastic indoor benches. If you are on a tight budget, you can buy plastic indoor benches and add a few accent pillows. While that may not seem like a lot right now, they will look as if you paid a fortune for them.

When it comes to locations, a screened porch or a sunroom make a great retreat for an outdoor gathering gone bad because of rain, heat or unwanted insects.
A storage bench is another way to increase the seating room for a family gathering. Not only do you get extra seats but you also have a place to store the things that are not in use at the moment.
Additionally, a futon or daybed can be used as a bench for that gathering as a place for people to sit. When the gathering is over and some of the family stays for the night they also provide a guest bed, giving them a place to sleep.
Another choice you have to make is whether you going to go out and buy indoor benches or if can you make them? You can go to a patio store or look on line and buy any of a number of indoor benches. If you like to have your hands a little more into things, you can go to a store and buy a kit that you have to assemble. Or, you can take it to the next level and do it all yourself from scratch. Then the outcome is only limited by your imagination. Paint it, stain it, or even put your own decorations on it. You are the only one that knows what you want so build it the way you want it and it will be the perfect bench for you.
Whether you want to spend a lot or a little, want a permanent fixture or to stack them and store them away, want to buy or build, or if you are looking for a specific color, rest assured your bench is out there.

The Beds Behind Those Bedtime Stories

by Leigh A. Matelas

Since sleep plays such an important role in our lives it's not surprising that beds feature prominently in many myths, fairy tales and other works of literature.
When we imagine the bed in a fairytale like Sleeping Beauty, we inevitably conjure up images of a huge palace chamber and an ornate mahogany four-poster bed draped with beautiful silken fabrics.
However, the characters in the ancient tales don't always sleep in a traditional bed, or even in a bedroom. Morpheus, the Greek god of sleep and dreams, slept in a bed made of ebony in his dimly lit Cave of Sleep. Forest elves make their leafy beds high in the treetops. And a vampire's resting place of choice is, of course, a coffin. It seems when it comes to beds and sleeping in stories, one size doesn't suit all...
Beds to fit everyone
If you've spent the night tossing and turning on an uncomfortable bed, you'll know how important it is to have a mattress of the right firmness. Goldilocks certainly appreciated this when she ventured into the house of the Three Bears. After tasting the porridge and sitting on all the chairs, she wandered upstairs to try out the beds. While Father Bear's bed was too hard and Mother Bear's bed too soft for her liking, Baby Bear's was just right and she was able to nod off straightaway.
Even more particular was the fairytale princess who endured a sleepless night because she could feel a pea underneath twenty mattresses and twenty layers of feather quilts. Her extreme sensitivity showed her to be of truly royal blood, and so she passed the Queen Mother's test and won the hand of the prince. They lived happily ever after, as usual, although you have to wonder how easy she was to share a bed with!

A more gruesome bed-related story can be found in the Greek myth of Procrustes. A sadistic bandit who lived in the hills near Athens, Procrustes would invite unwary travellers to lie down on his iron bed. If the traveller was too tall for the bed, Procrustes would chop his body until it was the right length. Victims who were too short would be stretched out on a rack.
The bed itself was adjustable and Procrustes would alter it as he saw people approaching to make sure it was never a perfect fit. Procrustes' evil deeds were finally stopped by the hero Theseus, who placed Procrustes on his own bed and cut off his head and feet. Today the expression 'a Procrustean bed' means an apparently arbitrary standard to which one is forced to conform.
Falling into an enchanted sleep is common in fairy tales and myths, but sometimes beds themselves can be transformed into magical objects. According to Arthurian legend, the wizard Merlin created an enchanted bed that drove everyone who slept in it out of his or her wits. Only the brave Sir Lancelot could resist the spell. More recently, in Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the children travel to London on a bed that can fly, thanks to a magic bedknob.
Sayings and superstitions about beds
Beds are the subject of a number of traditional sayings or expressions. 'A bed of roses,' for example, comes from Christopher Marlowe's 1599 poem, The Passionate Shepherd to his Love, in which he declares, 'And I will make thee beds of roses/And a thousand fragrant posies/A cap of flowers and a kirtle/Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle.' While Marlow had real roses in mind, the expression is used these days to refer to an unrealistic expectation of something being pleasant and easy, eg: 'Marriage isn't a bed of roses.' Saying 'he must have got out on the wrong side of bed' about someone who's been grumpy all day dates back to the ancient Romans, who believed that the left side was unlucky and that to get out on the left of your bed would bring you bad luck.
Other old superstitions suggest that it's bad luck to put a hat on a bed, that a bed facing north or south will bring you misfortune, and that interrupting bed-making results in a restless night's sleep. You should never place a bed with the bottom facing the door, since this symbolises the way you will be carried out (feet first) after your death. Finally, if you're single and you start making a bedspread or quilt, make sure you finish it, or according to folklore you'll never get to share your bed with anyone...

Learn How To Choose The Right Antique Furniture

by Constantine Balbozar

The condition of an antique will certainly affect its value. Always look for flaws; at least one or two. When an antique does not have any flaws it means it has been refurbished. Look for antiques that have aged naturally. If the furniture has been cared for then it should be worth more. Also keep in mind that original pieces contribute to raising its value. After you acquired your antique handle it with care. Keep in a clean environment and maintain it regularly. One you need to avoid is over cleaning your item because it will remove the natural chemical formations on its surface. These formations are what give it its distinctiveness. Owning antique furniture is like an investment. The value of the antique, however, depends on a number of factors that are associated with the piece of furniture itself. The era, the age, the quality, are just a few indicators of price.

Antique furniture can add style to your home. Incorporating distinctive antique furniture pieces in your house can add calls in your surroundings. There are of course, a few things you should keep in mind before you buy that wonderful piece of furniture. For a piece of furniture to be considered an antique it should be older than 100 years old. Some say 60 but most collectors would agree on 100. Anything less is considered a collectible item. Its value clearly depends on the particularities of the piece. Georgian period furniture, Regency furniture or Victorian and Edwardian pieces offer a distinctive style that can easily be incorporated in most modern design homes. For the experienced interior designer, when antique furniture is placed in scarcity throughout a home, they enhance the décor by reflecting the actual value of the antiques. Rare antiques have a higher value. The rarity of the antique is determined by how many similar pieces of the same antique furniture are available for purchase.

A Fresh New Look For Spring

by Chris Plumb

Conservatories are one of the most popular improvements homeowners can make to their properties. Not only do they add value, they also offer a pleasant, sunny space in which to work or play.
Yet, conservatories are often forgotten when it comes to interior design, with shabby, sun-damaged furnishings dulling what could be a cheerful, airy room. As the transitional space between home and garden, conservatory furniture faces much more wear and tear than in other rooms and is easily stained by mud or grass. And no matter how effective your blinds are, furnishings can quickly become faded or bleached by the sun. Conservatory furniture has to be hard wearing and functional to survive, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise on style.
This spring, why not breathe new life into your room with made to measure furniture covers that instantly transform the look of your space. There are many suppliers such as Plumbs, that can cover loose seat and back cushion covers are perfect for wicker and rattan furniture.
If you don't currently have rattan furniture then now is a good time buy as more and more natural fibers are making their way into our homes, in light of our desire to become more eco-friendly. It is best to choose natural surfaces and materials for our home furnishings, fabrics and finishes wherever possible. Not only do they look chic and trendy, but they wear brilliantly and have minimal environmental impact. Choosing natural products for our homes is not only imperative for the homes atheistic appeal, but also for our homes health.

You could even replace your iron coffee and end tables with natural rattan tables. This fabulous summer texture and earthy material will give an entirely new look and feel to the room. Remember, the very best rooms always employ a diverse use of textures.
Make sure you don't get carried away with the addition of rattan, you could leave your room feeling like a tiki tiki hut, which probably isn't the best idea. Adding rattan to your rooms brings the outdoors in - as our desire to blur the line between exterior and interior spaces continues.
Fresh floral cottons are massive this spring and are perfect for conservatories, as they emphasise the link between nature and the inside space. For a classic spring-time look, opt for pretty florals in pinks and blues and for a more contemporary feel, go for bold geometric prints on scatter cushions and accessories.
Make the most of your conservatory, so that you can get back to enjoying the long awaited spring sunshine.

If you're considering making a special trip, try checking one of these books out of your local library or picking one up at a book store.
2. For Bigger Discounts, Look Locally
While the brand names may not be as well-known, you can still find great deals locally, without making the trip to North Carolina. Look online for furniture manufacturers in your area. Google Maps lets you type in your address and search for businesses.
You can even look for Furniture Manufacturers as a business category and limit your search to those within 25 or 100 miles. Doing so makes it much easier to actually see and touch products you may opt to buy rather than being limited to purchases through a catalog or the Internet alone.

Additionally, if the manufacturer is indeed close to where you live, you can save a bundle on shipping charges if you have a sufficiently large hauling vehicle and can pick up the furniture yourself. You might even be able to rent a small truck or trailer for half a day, then pick up the items, deliver it to your home, and have the vehicle back to the renter in just a few hours.
3. Know the Difference Between Factory-Direct and Factory Outlets
Factory outlets, or furniture warehouse retailers, are still retailers who will be selling their products at a significant mark-up percentage. While you can still find great deals at these places, they're not actually factory-direct models.
Unless you're buying the piece of furniture right from the place where it's physically made and assembled, then you're not buying factory-direct. Retailers will tell you that since the product ships from the factory to you that you are buying factory-direct, but understand that you are still paying retail prices.
4. Try Custom-Made
Sometimes the best deal is to go straight to the craftsman and have a piece of furniture custom-made. Custom-built furniture often costs much less than most consumers expect. So, before you trek out to North Carolina for your next storage unit, try getting a quote from a local carpenter who may surprise you with both his creativity and low cost for materials and labor.

Choosing Glass Table Tops From a Glass Supplier

by Cindy Teruya

If you have a glass table that needs a new top or a table that needs a glass topper, you'll need to locate a good glass supplier. There are some things you need to consider when choosing a glass top. Glass comes in various thicknesses, and it is important to choose the thickness that best suits your needs.
If you are choosing for a dining table, you'll want to get a thicker piece. Thicker glass is heavy and will support the weight needed. When choosing for a coffee or end table, you may prefer a thinner piece. The glass supplier may provide pieces ranging from 3/8 inch to ½ inch thick.
Glass is a great choice for tabletops. A glass supplier can provide any size you need. It is a great choice for a clean surface. It can be cleaned easily with any type of glass cleaner. When you clean it, it becomes sanitary. Unlike wooden surfaces that retain bacteria in the cracks, it is a smooth surface that can be cleaned entirely. Glass tops are also beautiful. They are perfect with almost any type of decor.

Glass tops help to open up spaces and make them appear larger than they are. The tops improve the look of the home by making a more spacious and clean look. A glass supplier can provide you with the proper glass for your intended use. When you use the right thickness, it is very sturdy. Glass doesn't easily scratch, so the surface will remain beautiful for years to come. When choosing a glass table top, be certain to choose the thickness that is best for your application. A representative at the glass supplier can assist you if need be.

How Building Furniture Can Save You Money

by Ryan Page

With the right tools and skill set, you can enjoy a fulfilling hobby and save money by building your own furniture. Filling your home with pieces that you've built, refurbished, refinished or repaired yourself not only saves dollars, but it also fills you with satisfaction and pride. Keep reading to learn the basics on how to get started either making your own furniture or repairing the furniture that you have.
Start Small
Especially if you're new to woodworking or carpentry, you want to start small. Instead of learning as you go on a complicated dresser or armoire, maybe take a woodworking class that focuses on easier projects, such as a foot stool or a small table.
Once you have those foundation skills, you can then expand your tool inventory and your project scope.
Get Educated
Like the last tip suggested, educating yourself is going to make the difference between a poorly-made product and a masterpiece. If you don't have the time or the money for an evening carpentry class, check your local library or bookstore for books or DVDs that will help you tackle a particular project.
Build a Tool Library
Working with quality tools can mean the difference between a positive experience with a quality product and a bad experience with a poorly made product. While you shouldn't break the bank buying up every tool imaginable before you even start your first project, you should make sure you have the tools you need.
Because good tools are often expensive, most large-scale home hardware retailers offer tool or equipment rental programs. So, if you need a power sander or tile cutter, you can rent one for the day rather than shelling out a few hundred dollars on something you'll only use a few times.

Start With Refurbishing
Refurbishing or repairing older furniture can be a great way to start your furniture-building endeavors. Not only will you get an almost-new look on the item, but you'll also have a chance to look inside a piece of furniture, learn how it's made and put together, and gain a better understanding of the trade.
To find furniture pieces that you can fix up, try looking in your own house. From that old coffee table in the basement to that beat-up headboard that's sitting in the garage, you're likely to find something that could be sanded down, painted and refinished.
If you don't have any success at home, try checking your local thrift store, antique shops and flea markets for quality finds that just need a little loving care.

Cafe Furniture - What You Should Know Before Buying

by Andy S Baker

With the boom of the cafe industry came the clamor for furniture that will be suitable for this kind of business. Cafe owners search far and wide, hoping to find the perfect pieces that will beautify their cafe, knowing that furniture contribute largely to the success of a coffee business.
As a cafe owner, you know that durability and quality are the top qualities to look for when buying furniture. But aside from these two, there are many other things that you should keep in mind when you go furniture shopping. Here is a list of things that you should know before you buy cafe furniture.
1. Colors have effects on people. Most people think that colors are aspect of design meant simply to please the eyes. What most of us do not know is that colors have psychological effects on people's feelings. Knowing what the effects of colors are in people will make it easier for you to make your choice. For instance, you should know that shades of brown, yellow and orange on your wall will give your cafe a warm and inviting ambiance while blue is not a good idea for table tops because this is the least appetizing color.
2. People go to cafes to relax and unwind. Knowing this will tell you that it is essential to buy furniture that will provide customers with utmost comfort and relaxation. It is smart to invest on couches, a common find in many cafes, because they are comfortable to sit on and allows customers to unwind and chill out.
3. Ambiance matters. You should know that coffee is not the only thing that encourages people to go back to your cafe. The atmosphere also plays a vital role in drawing and attracting customers to your business. Your furniture should give off an inviting, relaxing and light atmosphere, which can make customers' stay worthwhile and enjoyable.

4. Furniture should blend well with the theme of the cafe as well as with the design and color of the interior. If the theme of your cafe is ultramodern, you have to buy pieces that are made of leather and metal and have colors black or red, whereas if your cafe has a rustic theme, orange and brown are ideal colors.
5. Form is just as important as function. When buying cafe furniture whether for commercial or private use, you should always strive to achieve balance between form and function, which work hand in hand in making the furniture a worthy investment. Choose pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing to the eyes but will also be highly functional.
6. Furniture will be subjected to daily wear and tear. Because of this, it's crucial that you only invest on the highest quality of furniture that will assure you of durability and permanence. Some of the ways to assure this is to buy only from reputable furniture suppliers and to examine carefully parts of the furniture before purchase.
7. Extremely cheap furniture usually means poor quality. If you think you're saving a few dollars by opting for cheaper furniture, you're wrong. You may end up spending even more because this pieces which are usually poor in quality, easily get damaged. You will have to spend a lot of money and time for repairs and replacements, which could have been avoided if you have prioritized quality over price in the first place.
8. Furniture contributes to the efficiency of the staff. Excellent furniture will maximize the productivity of the staff so it's best that you opt for these pieces that will enable them to give competent service to the customers.
Finding the pieces that will fit perfectly with your cafe may not be that easy. It will entail you to spend time and money as well as require you to be resourceful, creative, and patient. But you can be sure that all your efforts will be worth it since furniture will be a big factor to the success of your business.

Commercial Hotel Furniture - What to Look for

by Andy S Baker

Buying furniture is one of the things you need to take care of when putting up a new hotel business or renovating your previous one. Because it is a large investment to make, you should do everything to get it done right. Buying pieces that will not be useful to your hotel will certainly be a waste of money and time.
When shopping for furniture, it is of utmost importance to look for pieces that will...
1. Be a perfect balance between form and function. Always keep in mind that furniture's purpose is almost always just as significant as its physical appearance. An exquisitely looking bed will be futile if guests feel uncomfortable lying on it. Whereas a comfortable chair whose style is just as outdated as the fashion in the old centuries have no place in your modern hotel.
But take note that the words "almost always" were used to denote that there are some exceptions to this statement. For example, there are some pieces of furniture like paintings and sculptures whose sole purpose is to be a decorative element for your hotel. More than function, it is their form, which will weigh more value.
2. Blend beautifully with the overall atmosphere of the hotel. First, you have to decide what kind of theme and style you want your hotel to have. Then buy furniture that are in line with this theme.
For instance, if your hotel is traditional, classic wooden furniture are ideal whereas if it exemplifies a contemporary look, those that are made of metal and leather are perfect.
And it is not enough that you confine the theme in a single room. In fact, every single place in your hotel should have a continuing theme so that customers will not feel as if they are moving from one different hotel to another. Always remember that lack of coherence equates disorder.
3. Create a statement and make your hotel stand out. Doing this requires you to have an eye that can distinguish unique from outrageous, distinct from hideous. Give your hotel a personality through the pieces of furniture of your choice. With this in mind, it is important to be creative and more importantly, original.

4. Be appreciated by your target customers. To do this, you first have to do an extensive demographic research to find out which kinds of people are likely to appear at the front desk of your hotel-what age, class, occupation and so many more. Use this information to create a hotel atmosphere that will cater to their tastes and needs. Choose furniture that have features, style, colors, and function that they are most likely to value.
5. Provide your guests with utmost comfort. The needs of your customers should always be one of your top priorities. Choose furniture that will make their stay worthwhile and enjoyable.
6. Set the tone of the room appropriately. Each room in your hotel has a distinct purpose and the furniture in each room should serve those distinct purposes. These should also create the ambiance that you want to have in a specific room.
For instance, the furniture inside a hotel bedroom should provide guests with comfort and security, giving a relaxing and warm ambiance that will enable them to have a good rest. Meanwhile, the reception area should cater to the purpose of entertaining guests and keeping them occupied. The ambiance should be professional and yet not too stiff.
7. Suit the location where your hotel is located. The location of your hotel is also a major consideration in furniture selection. The climate in the area as well as the way of living of people around greatly influence what types of furniture you should buy. For example, if your hotel is in a quaint subdivision, your ultra modern furniture will hardly be appreciated. And if you are in an area where it is almost always snowing, be sure to incorporate pieces of furniture that will give comfort despite the cold such as thick curtains, chimneys and so on.
8. Last a long time. Invest only on high quality furniture from reputable suppliers that will guarantee you of durability and resilience.
Because the furniture plays an important role in the overall physical appearance of the hotel as well as the quality of services you offer, there is indeed little or no room for mistakes. Buying the right pieces is a crucial factor in the success of your hotel business.

Great Multi-Purpose Furniture That Will Save You Money

by Ryan Page

Not only does multi-purpose furniture save on space and functionality, it can also save you big money. By buying less, increasing your furniture's usability and consolidating your furniture needs into fewer pieces, you can save even more. To learn about great multi-purpose furniture that will save you a lot of cash, keep reading for fantastic tips and product recommendations.
1. Double Up on Storage.
Especially if you live in a small home or apartment, you know how important storage can be. Look for furniture with hidden storage like pull-out couches with under space for storing bed linens or ottomans with compartments for tucking away remote controls and television guides.
2. Always Get at Least Double Function.
Never buy just a bedside table. Instead, look for a bedside table that also has a drawer or even an extra shelf that you can use to tuck away reading glasses or books. This principle applies to everything from coffee tables to kitchen islands. By increasing your functionality, you're increasing your space.
3. Sleeper Sofas Can Save a Whole Room.
Though heavy and a little bit pricier, sleeper sofas, also known as pullout couches or hide-a-beds, save you the cost of furnishing and maintaining a guest bedroom without having to depend on a chintzy blowup mattress. So, if your square footage and your resources are limited, look into investing in a sleeper sofa to keep your guests comfortable.

4. Look for Adaptable Furniture.
Instead of limiting yourself to one size of dining room table, look for one that's extendable. That way you can keep it small when your space is limited and then expand it out when you have a full table of guests. That kind of multi-functionality saves you space and money.
5. One Storage Solution, One Price.
Instead of filling your home or living room with an eclectic mix of storage solutions, you can save hundreds or even thousands simply by investing in one, really good storage solution. By buying the right armoire or living room storage unit you can consolidate everything to one piece of furniture and keep your purchase to one item.
There are five ways that great multi-purpose furniture will save you money - the ability to double up on your storage, getting double the function, saving square footage, gaining functionality and adaptability and being able to buy less. With all these ways to save money, how could you resist multi-purpose furniture for your small space?

Children love comfort, probably even more than we adults. Moreover it is essential to provide your children with soft and comfortable seats, beds and couches instead of the regulation chairs and tables. This is because, our postures are determined when we are young, and only ergonomic furniture can help your child to develop better posture. It is highly important that parents realize the importance of ergonomic chairs, at an early stage of their child's life. Remember the hard, unyielding chairs we had when we were children? Such furniture have been found to be responsible for joint pains, back aches, head aches and other disorders in later life.

A bean bag is, as its name suggests a bag, filled with small bean sized thermocol or PVC pellets. The bag is usually of leather or vinyl and is washable. So, all the drinks and food spilt over it can be easily removed in one hard wash. The pellets are soft and comfortable, and when you sit on the bag, the pellets allow the bag to mould itself according to your curves. There is no chance that you'll suffer from discomfort. Moreover its low position makes you sit nearer to the floor which is actually great for your joints. Its variety of colors is sure to please any fashion conscious child of this decade. Moreover it is widely available, so depending on your budget get a branded beanbag like a lovesac, or a foofbag, or if your bean bag budget isn't that large, just look for a non branded product. The difference between the two is the brand, and the guarantee. There are so many alternatives available, you are sure to find a product according to your liking.
The only thing you need to monitor about the bag is condition of the pellets inside. Pellets get crushed with use over a period of time, so you need to refill the bag with new pellets. Bean Bags - The Future of Furniture

by Pattrick Jhonson

We live today in what is known as the 'jet age'. Our lives are fast, are work is tedious, our comfort zone is minimal. In a given week we are found to be spending more time at office than at home. 'Home' seems to be a glorified name for a place to rest, before the bugle blows once more and one heads to ones cubicle. We have no clue what harm we're imposing on our bodies due to this lifestyle. A recent survey showed that the youngsters today are more at risk to spondylitis, back and spine problems, head aches, and stress, than their parents or grandparents. It is slightly ironical that the world we created to make life easier for us, has turned around and made it more stressful than we can bear.
Doctors, physicians and trainers world wide have suggested small changes which we can implement to minimize stress and discomfort. These changes range from psychological changes regarding the outlook towards work, to physiological changes, including eating healthier food, wearing comfortable clothes and making our surrounding as comfortable as possible. Doctors now suggest that one invests in furniture which is ergonomic, that is, which follows the body's posture to make our rest and relaxation more restful. This is where beanbags come in.
Bean bags are the absolute opposite of those hard unyielding wooden chairs, sitting on which was an ordeal. Imagine the incalculable harm these chairs have been doing to your body over the years. A bean bag will simply follow your sitting posture or lying posture to accommodate you better. No hard chairs, no back pain.

Bean bags have a variety of use. You'll find it easier to relax on a beanbag with your partner and watch late night movies, cuddle up or go to sleep. Bean bags come in variety of sizes which will accommodate both you and your spouse in one chair. The good news doesn't end here. Bean bags also have added accessories like drink holder or popcorn holder, which can make movie viewing quite an enjoyable experience. If you spill drinks or food on the chair you have, you'd probably stain it for life, but no such problems with beanbags. They are completely washable, so you need not think of ruining the bag hen you're eating popcorn, while sitting on it.
Depending on your taste and your end use you can choose from a variety of bean bags available in the market. You can make your room jolly and colorful with bright colored bean bags or use sober colors to match your personality. You can get a beanbag for just yourself, or you can get a luvbag for your partner and yourself for those times together. You can even find bags suitable for the entire family of 4-5 members.
Bean bags need refilling periodically to maintain their comfort level. You just need to visit the nearest supplies store and get yourself a packet of the pellets which make the bag. They are widely available. If that sounds too much work, spend a little more and get a foofsac which promises durability for a much longer period than regular bean bags.

Leather Office Chairs - 5 Things To Look For When Shopping Online

by Curt Benkendorf

You already know the benefits of shopping online: lower prices, (usually) no tax, delivered right to your door, etc. But when it comes to leather office chairs, the Internet presents a few problems: how are you going to decide to buy something you can't sit in? Which websites are trustworthy to give your hard-earned money too? It's not like a $20 online purchase, where if it's a scam it's a lesson learned: chairs can run up to $1000 and beyond! Neither you nor I want to throw that kind of money around, so we want to make sure the site is trustworthy, we know what we're getting, and the site cares about us (and not just money). So what do you look for in a website while shopping for a leather office chair? Following are the 5 things you should check for, to ensure you are going to get a great buy for your money.
1. Description Should Give You a "Feel" for the Product
On the Internet, you don't know what the chair feels like. You don't know how comfortable it actually is! That can't be avoided. But you can get some information to help you discern that.
· Description: The product should have some sort of description, indicating what applications it might be useful for, what type of people the website is targeting. The description should also indicate the type of leather in the chair, which will dramatically affect your experience (if you're curious, see my article on the common leather types here). If there is no description, that's risky because you're essentially buying a chair off of some numbers (dimensions). Have you ever bought anything, much less a leather office chair, like that? Look for a description, it'll help you make your decision.
· Pictures: One picture is great, but how about multiple views of the chair, or pictures of every color the chair is available in? Now we're starting to get somewhere!
· Dimensions: How much room is the chair going to take up? If you only have 2 feet of space behind your desk, you don't want a leather office chair that will take up 3 feet. Surprisingly, an ill-fitting chair is a frequent reason for returning, so save yourself the hassle and check this first.
2. Return Policy Should Make You Comfortable
Before you purchase a leather office chair from a website, look at their return policy, because there is always a chance you won't like the chair you get, or it won't fit, or it's broken, etc. Here's an example I pulled up after a few minutes of searching (website address suppressed):

"All returns are subject to our standard return policy that specifies that you will be charged both the original outbound freight charge (which was included in your price) and the return freight charge. You are responsible for making the return freight arrangements with the appropriate carrier and for sending the product to us in Providence freight prepaid. We will not accept collect freight shipments. Returns of more than 6 chairs will be subject to a 25% handling fee. Chairs must be in re-salable condition and in the original factory packaging. You must take the time to ensure that the product is properly repacked so that it travels back to us safely."
So if you want to return under this policy, you have to pay both return and original shipping? Their customers are lucky this site doesn't charge a restocking fee. Oh wait, they do, if you placed a large order with them! Return policies like this one remind me of those pharmaceutical ads on TV: while some woman is dancing on a beach a man is speaking rapidly "May cause indigestion, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, sever laughing fits, and possible death." You should expect to only pay return freight, and that they accept the return unconditionally. In other words, if the chair is uncomfortable, if the color wasn't what you expected, or if you just don't like your new chair, you should be able to return it. Note: sites offering "free" shipping may want you to pay for original freight as well if you return it, so watch out for that before you order.
3. "Free" Shipping Doesn't Drive Your Price up
Who doesn't like free shipping? These companies must be pretty special to procure free shipping for you, right? Wrong. Shipping always costs something, whether you pay for it or the business pays for it. And I guarantee you the business won't end up paying for it, because they don't want to hurt their profits. So that means you end up paying the shipping, in the form of higher item prices. While this isn't always the case, if you go out and do your research, you will find that most times, it is!A second thing to watch for is product eligibility. Some sites offer free shipping only on certain items, or only once you've reached a certain dollar amount. So, if you remember anything from this article, remember this: don't assume a website that offers "free" shipping will give you the best deal; do your research! Chances are, the overall amount you end up paying for the item and shipping will be the same as the same item at a "free" shipping site, maybe even less!
4. SKU Numbers are Accurate
One thing I want to stress while shopping for a leather office chair is the importance of research. Find out if the website truly has the best price. Find out what other people think about the product. One easy way to do this is to take the SKU number from a product you're interested in, and typing it into Nextag (http://www.nextag.com/). You can quickly see the prices at various stores, and any user reviews those stores might have on the product.Unfortunately, you can't access this valuable information if the website owner places the wrong SKU number on the page, either accidentally or on purpose. Such sites are not confident in the value they can deliver to you, so don't waste your time.
5. Website has Some "Community" to it
Finally, while this won't help you purchase a leather office chair, per se, it will help you gain a feel for the website that you're considering. Does the website have a community aspect to it? This can take on many forms: forums, articles, links to other web pages, user reviews on products, etc. If a website just has products for sale, what do you think they're interested in? That's right, just your money. They probably don't care about giving back to the community, or you frankly, because if they did, don't you think they would try to involve you? You should expect that a website you are going to spend your hard earned dollars with will care about you! There's plenty of websites do: they build communities, or publish articles to aid your shopping experience, so go find those.
Good Luck!
Friends, it's time for me to leave you for now. It's an Internet jungle out there, but I hope this article was insightful for you to help you have more confidence that you'll pick the right website to pick your next comfortable leather office chair from.
To Your Shopping Success!

Building Your Own Furniture - Frequently Asked Questions

by Ryan Page

When you build or refurbish your own furniture, you don't just save money, but you also wind up with a product that fills you with the pride of accomplishment. With refurbished or repaired pieces, you also cut down on waste and get the satisfaction of recycling and reusing old items to make something new.
Finally, one of the last benefits of building your own furniture is that it allows you to customize and create the items that you actually want, not the one the catalog company tells you that you want.
Keep reading to learn the answers to common questions about building your own furniture and its benefits.
I'm curious about building my own furniture, but how do I start?
The best answer is that you should start small. Depending on your experience, tools and available time, you're more likely to reach success with your first project if you focus on building your skill level with a small project.
Try refinishing an old table or building something small, like a footstool, to get comfortable using the tools and working on creating a skills' foundation.
Do I need to take a woodworking class?
No, but it can help. You'll be surrounded by fellow students and teachers who are there to help answer your questions. For an evening a week for just a few months, you can build up a lot of practical knowledge.
If you don't have the time or the money for a class, look into how-to books or DVDs that focus on the particular project or skill that catches your interest. Also, check online forums, like those at Lowes.com, as a good resource and place to ask questions and share ideas.

I'm interested in refurbishing, but what do I refurbish?
Look around your house for old pieces that could do with a newly sanded finish, fresh coat of varnish, spots of glue on the wood joints and new drawer pulls. If you're not having much success, check the flea markets and local used goods stores for furniture items that are begging to be refinished.
What should I look for when choosing a piece of furniture to refinish?
Look for a piece that is well-built and has a solid foundation. If you can fix the problem, like a shaky leg that just needs to be screwed in, then go for it, but don't waste your time on a poorly-built piece of scrap.
Next, look for items that are made of actual wood, not particle board. While it's possible to strip and paint particle board, it's rarely worth it in the long run.

How to Refinish Furniture To Save Money

by Ryan Page

Buying brand new furniture is not only expensive, but you're also less likely to get a quality item that's built to last. Whether you're refurbishing an heirloom chock full of sentimental value, sprucing up a flea market find or simply repairing an old piece of furniture, refinishing furniture is a great way to keep money in your pocket and reduce waste. Keep reading for 7 great tips and steps that will teach you how to refinish furniture to save money.
1. Make Sure the Furniture is Structurally Sound.
Remember, no matter how times you sand and refinish a poorly-built piece of furniture, it's still going to be poorly built. Before you refinish any item, make sure it's structurally sound.
Make any structural repairs like re-gluing the wood joints or tightening any loose screws before you start the refinishing process.
2. Remove the Old Finish.
Probably the messiest and most difficult part of refinishing furniture is removing the old finish. The easiest way to remove old varnish and paint is by using chemical strippers and sanding. When using a chemical stripper, always do it outside to minimize the inhalation of fumes and wear protective safety gear. Also, you'll need to follow up any chemical stripping with a final sanding. First, go over the piece with 120 grit sandpaper and finally a fine 220 grit sandpaper.
3. Fill in the Grain.
Some woods don't require you to fill in the grain, but woods like mahogany and oak have a wider grain structure that should be filled in before refinishing furniture.
You can get grain filler in most wood shades and colors, and it can be applied before or after you stain.

4. Apply Sanding Sealant.
Sanding sealer goes on the wood not after you sand, but before you sand. While it's not a requirement, it can make the wood absorb the stain in a more even pattern and therefore prevent over staining.
5. Stain the Wood.
If you're refinishing a wood piece, you're most likely going to be using stain to refinish your furniture. There are four different stains you can use: oil-based stains, water-based stains, gel stains and one-step stain finishes.
When applying a stain, always follow the manufacturers' instructions.
6. Varnish the Wood.
Seal in all your hard work and keep your wood safe by applying a few coats of polyurethane or lacquer finish.
7. Put on New Hardware.
Finally, put the finishing touches on your furniture piece by updating it with new drawer pulls or hardware fixtures to give it a fresh and new look.

Reupholster Old Furniture and Save Money

by Ryan Page

Do you have a beloved, but old chair that's starting to look a little rough around the edges? Maybe a flea market find of a sofa that's well built, but boasting a few holes? You can learn how to reupholster old furniture and save money. Keep reading to learn how reupholstering can save you money, and a basic outline of how to tackle the do-it-yourself (DIY) reupholstering project.
How Does Reupholstering Old Furniture Save Me Money?
Whether you use a professional upholsterer or DIY person, you're restoring an old piece of furniture and foregoing the expense of purchasing a whole new piece.
Not only is reupholstering great for restoring older furniture, it also represents a return to a more sustainable way of living. Instead of indulging in the consumerism mentality of constantly buying everything new, you can refurbish an older piece and work with what you already have - and enjoy the results!
Reupholstering older furniture allows you to repair broken frames, fix or replace strings, install new padding, choose your own customized fabric and even monitor the quality of craftsmanship that goes into the structure. With those kinds of options and features, you can't afford not to reupholster old furniture.
What Are the Basics of Reupholstering Old Furniture?
If you're just starting out reupholstering an old piece of furniture, here are some simple and basic steps to give you an overview of the project. You may want to consult a more thorough DIY book or video to help you through it.

First, you need to assemble your tools, including a pair of needle nose pliers, new fabric, batting, carpet knife, chalk, heavy scissors, screwdriver, industrial staple gun, reupholstering hammer, a tack puller and a claw tool.
If you like, you can often purchase a full reupholstering tool kit from many hardware retailers.
Then you essentially disassemble the piece of furniture, replacing batting and hardware as you go, and finally reattaching new fabric using upholstery tacks, staples and glue. Of course, when you actually start to reupholster old furniture, it's going to be a lot more complicated, but that's the basics of any reupholstering project.
For beginners, try to start small and focus on a surmountable project, like a dining chair cushion. From there, set your sights higher to full-length sofas and massive headboards, because once you get the upholstery bug, you won't be able to stop working on old furniture to save money.
