by Jennifer Akre

Don't worry because all you have to do is just turn to wooden coffee tables to solve your problem.
Wooden coffee tables are extremely practical because they offer you a great place to set things down that is the result of their design. This design creates a table that is about three feet long, two feet wide, and sits about one and a half to two feet off the ground. Its table top is what makes it so practical since its spacious and is perfect for not only laying down snacks, but other items and magazines.
Over the years, some variations have been made to the design of this furnishing to make them even more useful. Like, nowadays you can get wooden coffee tables that have drawers built right into them, providing you with a fantastic place to store different things. And, some will even come with lower shelves.
Wooden coffee tables are not just a great choice because of their functionality because they are also a nice way to add a decorative touch to your space as well. This is the result of the many beautiful substances that they can be crafted from, which are then made even more pleasing to the eye with the lovely ways they can be finished. For example, you can get one that is made from maple that has just a simple lacquer or sealant applied to it so you can enjoy the natural look of the wood or you can get one made from pine that is covered in a rich hand painted espresso finish. Those are just two of the choices available since there are a slew of others, so many that it would be silly to list them all.

All the substance and finishing choice yield wooden coffee tables of all sorts of styles. For instance, the one that is made from maple and has just the lacquer applied to it would probably be a traditional option while the other made from pine featuring an espresso finish would be more on the modern side. There are contemporary options available as well along with those that are more transitional and combine styles.
To easily check out the different wooden coffee tables that you could purchase for your living room, just jump on the Internet and do some online shopping. You can find what you want in no time at all and when you do make a purchase, it will generally be at a pretty reasonable price. Kitchen Table and Chairs - How to Find the Right Ones

by Jennifer Akre

For a lot of us, the kitchen table and chairs were the family gathering place as we were growing up. Many of us rarely stepped foot in a formal dining room, save large family holidays. Most of the eating and socializing were done in the kitchen.
It was a gathering spot where you not only ate dinner every day, but also discussed life, the day at school, the day at work. It's often the place where kids did their homework and had it checked over by their parents before they were released to go.
If you were looking for the pieces of furniture in the house that got the greatest work out by the family, the kitchen table and chairs were it.
As you're setting up your modern kitchen and considering a kitchen table and chairs purchase, you need to make sure to have kitchen tables and chairs that will stand up to the test of time. You need to be confident they can handle all the uses you are going to place on them.
In addition to looking for a sturdy table, you want chairs that are comfortable. One of the reasons a lot of people started moving away from the kitchen table and chairs is that they were wood chairs and not as comfortable as a sofa or other cushioned chair. But you can bring the family back to the kitchen table by finding seating that is more comfortable to sit on. Some of today's kitchen table and chairs even have back cushions so you don't mind sitting back and relaxing.

Another consideration to make when it comes to your kitchen table and chairs is if you have children. While you will need sturdy pieces of furniture, if you have little ones, you need to make sure the chairs are not too heavy, so the kids can get in and out of them.
The next consideration is how many people will be sitting at your table on a daily basis. The chairs you choose will make a difference in how many people you can fit at the table. Some thinner chairs will allow you to squeeze in two more people at a rectangular table. You can remove those chairs when it's just four of you, but bring them in when company is over and still be comfortable while gathered together.
The final consideration to take when choosing a kitchen table and chairs is to make sure they are easy to clean and maintain. This table is going to have encounters with markers, crayons and pencils form school work not to mention spilled food and drink that will end up on it. You should find a surface that is not going to be a nightmare to keep clean. Until the kids are a little older you don't want a table with grooves and dips or you will be spending a lot of time scrubbing out the baby food and other gooey items that have oozed into those spaces.

The Pros and Cons of Consulting an Interior Designer Before You Buy Furniture

by Ryan Page

A professional interior decorator, or even designer, is someone you can hire to help you decorate and organize a room to make it more attractive, functional and up-to-date. These décor professionals can do everything from a simple consultation to a full home overhaul. But, is it worth it?
Keep reading to learn the benefits and disadvantages of hiring or consulting a professional before you buy furniture.
Benefit - Discounted Prices
Because interior decorators have extensive contacts, they can often purchase furniture pieces at wholesale or trade prices. Consequently, you can routinely pick up beautiful, designer items for less money than you would ordinarily pay.
Drawback - Mark-ups and Consultation Fees
Interior design or décor professionals don't work for free. What you may save on wholesale furniture prices is probably going to cost you in consultation fees.
Benefit - Expertise and Professional Consultation
If you're not a design expert or even if you simply don't have the time to deal with home decorating, hiring a professional to take care of those decisions could be a wise investment. If your time is valuable, delegating furniture purchasing to someone else could even save you money.
Drawback - Lack of Personal Input
While most design professionals actively seek input and guidance from their clients, you're still surrendering some control over your space and furniture buying decisions. If you're the kind of person who likes to be intimately involved in your home, consulting a professional might not be right for you.
Benefit - Tracking Down Discounts
Because interior decorators work in the field every day, they have a great knowledge base about tracking down hot furniture deals, where the good sales are and how to locate quality products at discounted prices.

Benefit - Making you Stick to Your Budget
One of the best benefits of working with an interior design professional before you buy furniture is that they make you stick to a budget. Let's say you set out with a personal budget of $4000 to refurnish your living room. If you hire a professional consultant for $500 and give her $3500 to work with, you're more likely to come in on budget than if you go out on your own.
Why? Because once you're shopping, you're more likely to authorize extra purchases, pull out that second credit card or indulge in items that you don't need. A professional can rein in those impulses.
In short, whether consulting a professional before you buy furniture is worth it is going to depend on you and understanding your purchasing and designing style.

The Arts & Crafts Movement

by Ariana Rodriguez

The Arts & Crafts movement began as a British aesthetic movement but quickly made its way to the United States in the 19th century. The movement was at its height in Britain between 1880 and 1910, then traveled and became popular in the United States between 1910 and 1920. The ideals behind the movement demonized the Industrial Revolution for being the source of repetitive and mundane production. The Arts & Crafts movement sought to return to handcraft, where items like furniture were simple and authentic, unlike ornate construction of the Victoria Era. This movement was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, who romanticized the work of craftsmen as something to take pride in.
John Ruskin's influence on the Arts & Crafts movement derived from his book "Unto This Last," which was inspired by Christian socialism. His book attacked laissez faire because he felt it did not acknowledge the complexities of human desires and motivation and the State should intervene and favor these higher values. Ruskin's ideals regarding the "division of labour" were especially influential on the Arts & Crafts founder, William Morris. Ruskin believed that unequal labor distribution deeply affected the poor emotionally. By being treated as tools working monotonously instead of humans with creativity, the poor were unsatisfied and their hate towards the rich grew.
In the 1800's, William Morris was an influential English writer, a socialist reformer, an artist, a printer, and designer. Morris hoped to revive tapestry weaving as a fine art, along with the hand printing of books, furniture-making and other crafts. In 1861, he founded Morris & Co., which was made up of decorators, architects, and artists. In the 1860's, Morris decided to focus on the decorative arts. His designing career began when he decorated the Red House in Bexleyheath, which was built for him by architect, Phillip Web. This successful venture led to the formation of the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later renamed Morris & Co.), where they created furniture, carvings, fabric, tapestries, stained glass, and wallpaper. Inspired by Ruskin, they created products that didn't undermine the skill of the craftsman.

In the late 1890's, the Arts & Crafts movement made its way to America. The 1896 death of William Morris signaled the end of the Arts & Crafts movement in England but indicated the beginning of the movement in America. A meeting was held in Boston where influential architects, designers, and educators gathered and were determined to bring over the design reform set forth by William Morris in Britain. In the first Arts & Crafts exhibition in 1897, craftsmen, consumers, and manufacturers realized this movement's potential and soon embraced it, beginning in Boston. The next year, several craftsman guilds and societies sprung up and also in 1898, Gustav Stickley founded Gustav Stickley & Co. in Syracuse, New York. It was his simple, geometric designs that defined the American Arts & Crafts movement.
Stickley was a firm believer in the movement's ideals and he expressed his dedication with furniture and home designs. In 1901, he began to showcase his designs and the ideals of the movement through the publishing of The Craftsman magazine, which ran from October 1901 to December 1916. His publication spread the philosophy of the English Arts & Crafts movement but eventually his writing evolved to reflect the voice of the American movement. His first issue of The Craftsman was devoted to William Morris and the second to John Ruskin. He wanted to spread his beliefs of self-reliance and the importance of the home, so his magazine also including tips on gardening, instructions for working with ceramics, metal, leather, textiles and other media to keep readers productive even in their leisure time. Many refer to the Arts & Crafts movement as the Craftsman movement, mainly because of the influence of Stickley's publication.
As America evolved from farm living to city life, many people found that the Craftsman style reflected a rural country life that few people experienced. Nevertheless, work from big-name designers like Stickley was still prized and very expensive at the time. They were still able to set trends that other mass-producers could copy. Sears Robuck & Co. soon had their own versions of Craftsman furniture and people of all economic backgrounds were able to own a piece of the lifestyle. By 1915, the trend was dying down and coupled with social changes caused by the eventual entry into WWI, Americans had to deal with reality instead of their dream homes. Even Stickley was forced out of business; he stopped publishing The Craftsman in 1916 and declared bankruptcy in 1917. The styles that followed included Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie style based on flat Midwestern landscape and European Modernism.
While the Arts & Crafts movement may have ended, its design effects are still obvious in many homes worldwide. It was a movement that can't be ignored and the idealism, beauty, and simplicity remain as inspiring now as it did in the past.

How to Find Buffet Furniture Online

by Jane Worthington

You may have recently decided to upgrade your outdated dining room with new buffet furniture, and you've heard that you will probably get the best deal if you shop online. The new trend in shopping for buffet tables has gone virtual, with many retailers taking their goods to sell online. As convenient as it is to shop online at home and save yourself time and money, it can also be a little scary. We all hear about identity theft and horror stories of friends or coworkers who ordered something online and never received their item or it was not as promised. So how can you protect yourself from the security threats and disreputable businesses on the Internet? Just use your common sense as you would out there at a traditional store and thoroughly research who you are doing business with online.

Check the Online Credibility. When you are looking at potential stores you might like to purchase buffet tables from, look at their privacy policies, terms, and security. Do these stores have secure sites to protect your private information once it's online? This means that they have a SSL, or security certificate which protects your credit card and personally identifying information. What is their privacy policy? Do they share your information with third parties? What are their terms and conditions? Look at their refund/exchange policy as well to give yourself peace of mind should you not be satisfied with your buffet furniture when you receive it. Keep in mind that reputable online merchants will have their customer satisfaction policies posted somewhere easy to find on their websites.

Shop Around at Least 3 Webstores. Shop, shop, shop around! Yes, we heard it from our parents and grandparents, and this advice is still a great idea no matter where you're browsing around. With so many online furniture stores, it may take a little research time on your part to find the best deal and the most reputable business. Take your time and browse around for the buffet styles you'd really like to see in your dining room or living room, and see which buffet furniture webstores carry those styles. The price should be fairly consistent from store to store, but if one is significantly higher than you know you can cross that one off your list. Beware if one lists their products for a substantially lower price, because if it looks too good to be true it probably is. That may be a shady retailer, and you don't want to do business there. After browsing around enough credible online stores, you will have an idea of the average prices for the buffet tables you like, so now keep your eyes peeled for the discounts or other deals. Don't forget that incentives like "free shipping" can save you a couple hundred dollars in delivery charges.

Don't be afraid of jumping on the "save money, buy online" bandwagon. Just make sure to do business with reputable online merchants who are looking out for your purchasing satisfaction and security. To protect yourself, check the online credentials of the Webstore you like, making sure that your private information is handled professionally and carefully, and that they have a satisfactory refund/exchange policy should you not be happy with your buffet furniture when it arrives. Secondly, shop around and do your research to find the best prices or deals on buffet tables with the online store which utilizes business practices with customer satisfaction as a top priority. If you do your research, you can save yourself hassle and money by shopping online.

Choosing A Mattress

by Julie Henningfield

Whether you realize it or not, a poorly constructed mattress can have a huge impact on your back's health. A mattress lacking in back support reinforces poor sleeping posture, strains muscles and does not help keep the spine in alignment.
All of these factors can contribute to low back pain. Sleepless nights also bring unproductive tomorrows. Verlo Mattress Factory Stores franchise owner Darrell Olson recommends looking at choosing a mattress as a major investment in your health.
Olson recommends walking through several steps before making the important buying decision.
"First off, choosing the right sleep set is a decision only you can make, and of course, it's a decision you need to make lying down," Olson said. "I suggest wearing comfortable clothes and shoes you can remove easily to create a true sleep experience. It is also helpful to bring your sleeping partner along and 'test drive' a variety of mattresses together. If you do have a sleeping partner, don't settle for anything smaller than a queen. Consider a king if you're tall or like lots of extra space."
Olson also suggests that individuals keep in mind that today's mattresses are much more "sleeper-friendly."
"Get rid of those old notions about mattresses having to be from the Middle Ages, as hard as a board, to be good for you. Conventional mattresses combine comfort with deep-down support. Innovative technology is manufactured into many sleep systems," Olson said.

Along with state-of-the-art technology, Olson recommends looking for quality in outward appearance as well. "Look for fine tailoring, superior fabrics and a surface that looks and feels plush. Better sleep sets feature extra layers of soft cushioning in high-quality natural or man-made fibers," Olson said.
He added, "Once you've decided on a new mattress, don't make the mistake of putting it on old box springs. A mattress and box spring are designed to work together as a sleep set."
Finally, Olson recommends investing in the best.
"When you take into account that you'll be spending three of the next 10 years in bed, it makes sense to invest in the best-quality sleep set your budget will allow."

How Furniture Window Shopping Can Save You Money

by Ryan Page

What's one of the best ways to save money? Window shopping, and not because you're not buying. By "window shopping," we're not necessarily talking about a literal walking past the windows of outside stores or those in a mall. Rather, we mean comparison shopping, regardless of how you do so. So, for example, this could be done very simply on the Internet as well as around physical shops.
Window shopping lets you, the consumer, stay informed about available products, pricing in your area and upcoming sales. Most shoppers know the best techniques to find great deals, but how you have confidence that you have actually found one can be a little more difficult.
Did you know that almost 90 percent of shoppers do some sort of physical window shopping before they actually commit to a purchase? That statistic doesn't even include shoppers who investigate and research a product or retailer online.
When it comes to furniture shopping, window shopping is a great way to keep an eye out for bargains, get a real feel for the products and materials that you're interested and get to know the retailers in your area or online. If you can make the time, a few trips to the store before you actually make that furniture purchase is all part of consumer research.
Did you know that almost 20 percent of Google's web searches are consumer or purchasing related? That's billions of searches everyday looking for information on particular products, brands, retailers or sales.
To really get the full benefit of a window shopping experience, try actually going into the store. You'll get the opportunity to actually feel the furniture fabric and even sit on it to gauge its comfort level for you and family members. That tactile experience goes well beyond anything the Internet can offer.
There's another advantage to window shopping, and that's price awareness. Once you have your radar turned on and your eyes looking out for a particular product, you start to notice price fluctuations.
You will spot flyers advertising furniture sales and billboards boasting great deals on living room sets. As you build up a price awareness over the weeks or months that you're window shopping, you increase your knowledge and confidence as a consumer, meaning you're more likely to spend less on your next furniture purchase and purchase what you really want for your home.

In short, window shopping is a great way to save money on your next furniture purchase. So, if you're saving up now or planning to buy within the next few months, it's time to get your glasses out, but not your wallet, and start "shopping" before you buy.

Before You Buy Dining Room Table

by Julie K Brown

Dining is one of the most important things people do in their day, though they may not realize it. Why, because aside from quelling hunger pangs, dining is also meant to spend some quality time with the whole family.
This is why close attention should be paid to make dining room as comfortable as possible. Yes it does cost some serious money but with some adjustments, even forlorn rooms can be made as satisfying as mom's home cooking without denting the pocket by much.
Just how to do it? Let's start with dining room tables, which is the focus of this article.
Choosing the right dining room table goes beyond simple aesthetics. Its location determines its style and materials, for example in kitchens, a hard-wearing solid wood top is crucial; large, formal dining rooms require a table with a strong presence; if your taste veers towards modern then contemporary and modern dining tables would work best.
These decisions will affect the look of the home and sense of space. So before actually going for shopping ponder over following points.
Before Shopping for a Dining Room Table
To fine tune your planning, here's a list of things to consider prior to your purchase:
1. Budget - How much have you allocated?
2. Family - What is the size of your family?
3. Space - What is the size of your dining room? Cramped space makes getting in and out of chairs awkward.
4. Lifestyle - Do you entertain often? Formally or informally?
5. Usage - What other usage do you have for the table e.g. study, arts and craft?
6. Special requirements - Do you need mobility or you would want to extend it to seat 12?
In addition to the above, take along the floor plan and measurements when you go shopping.

Tips on Picking the Right Dining Room Table
Following points would help you in selecting the right dining table:
Dining Table Shape - When considering a dining room table, its shape is the most important consideration since it affects the space in your dining room. Find out the pros and cons of common shapes. For example, a circular, glass dining table may be very trendy looking and would give your dining area a modern appeal. But you would need to have a large, square-shaped area to give it enough room.
Dining Table Size - Take note of the size of the dining area and the size of the table to check whether the table would have enough breathing space around it.
Dining Table Material - Since the dining room tables anchor the look of the space, its material affects the moods and style you'd like to bring to the room. Decide on what suits you best in terms of materials. Again, the uses you will put your dining table to will help you decide the most suitable material.
Dining Table Style - Make a statement and select the right style to add character and flair to your dining room.
Remember that a good dining experience needs a relaxed atmosphere so don't get hung up on designer looks. No table should be so precious that guests are afraid of leaving smudges. Destined to be oft-used, this piece of dining room furniture must be adaptable to the household's needs.

Antique Furniture - A Buyers Guide

by Lindy Vaughan

You can add style to your home with distinctive antique furniture, but what should you think about before you buy that special period antique?
An antique is classified as a piece of furniture that is older than 100 years and has retained an appeal to the buyer. Georgian period items, Regency furniture, Victorian and Edwardian pieces offer their own distinctive style to fit with the surroundings of many modern homes.
Scarcity of antique furniture reflects the values of antiques. A rare antique will be higher in value. Be sure you are buying from a reputable buyer, LAPADA (the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers) antique dealers observe the codes of practice set down by the association so that you can buy antiques with confidence and peace of mind.
The condition of an antique will affect its value. Do not be tempted to buy 'flawless' antiques that have been thoroughly refurbished. The effects of ageing reflects the genuine nature of an antique. Antiques look their best in their original condition (provided they have been well cared for). The originality of antique furniture is what makes an antique retain its value.
You can now find a lot of information about antiques on the internet, for example, searching for Victorian furniture will show a plethora of sites, and will provide an indication of price range (depending on the condition of the antique). But remember, if the antique piece looks perfect, it is unlikely to be genuine (it may be a reproduction), or has had its value reduced by 'over-enthusiastic' refurbishment.
The internet is a useful source of information; however exercise care when buying antiques online. A first hand look at the antique product is not possible on the internet and the website photos may hide possible defects and deficiencies. A reputable antiques dealer will be happy to send you detailed photos to highlight any blemishes with the antique furniture.

Buying from a reputable antique dealer will reassure you that the antique is genuine, a certificate proving its originality (provenance) may also be provided.
When you have purchased your antique, take care to handle and care for it appropriately. Your dealer will be able to offer advice on its care and maintenance. Make sure you avoid over zealous cleaning of your antique, this removes the 'patina' (develops over the aging process) that adds value to your antique.

Sideboards Are Essential in Your Dining Room

by Jane Worthington

For those who like to entertain guests, or those who simply need more storage in their home, a sideboard may be a very useful and fashionable piece of buffet furniture for you to invest in. Although the word "sideboards" can be slightly ambiguous, it generally refers to the type of construction found in a buffet table or a buffet cabinet. They are also called servers, because they can be used daily for serving breakfast, lunch or dinner. Whichever name you have for it, this type of buffet furniture has been around for centuries, because it's a tried and true, practical piece to have in your dining room or living room.
A new sideboard will not only add storage and utility to your dining room, but it will also instantly upgrade your décor. If you are worried that a buffet table or buffet cabinet is a piece of furniture from days of old or not fashionable, you would be mistaken. Sideboards can be found in most upper class homes, because they are an essential piece of dining room furniture for entertaining guests. You can find these buffets in all styles, so you can find the perfect one for your home whether you have an antique, traditional, rustic wood, or contemporary design in your dining room or living room.
Now that you know you won't have a outdated or unfashionable piece of furniture in your house, you may wonder what uses you can find for your new sideboard. They do have a variety of uses, depending on the design you select. If you go with a buffet table style, then you will have an extra tabletop for those extra food dishes, desserts, or drinks when you have a dinner party or festive occasion. The table takes up very little floor space, and will also come with drawers, which are the perfect place for your small items. A buffet table style is ideal when you have limited floor space, and just need a minimal storage area for extra silverware or table linens.

The other, more spacious option you can choose to go with for your new sideboard is one that is designed like a buffet cabinet. This type of buffet will give you ample storage space for your extra dishes, glasses, and entertaining ware, but it will take up more floor space than the table style. And a cabinet style buffet will also provide that handy extra tabletop for those beverages, desserts, or extra entrees when you entertain. You can find sideboards in either the buffet cabinet or buffet table style, depending on your available floor space and storage needs.
Buffet cabinet, buffet table, server or sideboard, they all refer to the same kind of furniture with different style variations. If you like to entertain or just need more storage for those extra dishes, silverware, or table linens, then consider getting a new piece of buffet furniture. A sideboard combines utility with aesthetics, giving you a very useful piece of furniture while simultaneously upgrading the appearance of your home.

How to Find Furniture Deals at Garage Sales

by Ryan Page

Whether you're a college student just starting out or a savvy homeowner looking for a great piece at an even better price, garage sales can be a goldmine of furniture finds. To learn how to find furniture deals at garage sales, keep reading for 5 tips from the best in the business.
1. Get There Early
While sellers are more likely to part with items for less money later in the day, you're also more likely to pick up the better items earlier in the morning. Don't be one of those garage sale shoppers who loiters out on the front lawn at 5 in the morning, but do get there bright and early to catch the goods.
2. Shop Off-Season
Some of the best garage sale deals can be had during the off-season. From mid-winter in-home moving sales to late fall garage sale specials, you're going to find highly motivated sellers and less competition from other shoppers.
3. Get Over the Cosmetics
If you're going to be a great garage sale furniture finder, you need to stop looking for perfection. Instead of complaining about how an item is dirty or needs a new coat of paint, think about how easily you could clean it off or refinish it - all for a significantly lower price than buying it new.

4. Look For Quality
Remember, a low-priced, but poorly-built piece of furniture is still just poorly built. Before you jump on every bargain, make sure the foundations are there for a good piece of furniture. No matter how many times you sand down and repaint junk, it's still going to be a piece of garbage in the end, so look for well-made furniture that you can work with and that will last for years.
5. Always Haggle
While there's no need to be aggressive or try to low-ball your neighbors, there's nothing wrong with a bit of friendly haggling. In fact, garage sale hosts expect it.
Some haggling strategies include always coming in at about 50 to 75% of what you actually want to pay and asking for discounts on bulk purchases. For example, if you tell your seller you'll pay full price if they'll throw in the matching end table for free, you're more likely to get a better deal.
Essentially, the keys to garage sale success are getting there early, shopping in the off-season, looking past cosmetic flaws, keeping an eye out for quality and always haggling. With these five hot tips, you'll know exactly how to find furniture deals at garage sales.

Seven Quick Tips For Saving Money On Furniture

by Jamie Jefferson

Furnishing your home is one of the most expensive processes you can go through, but it doesn't have to be. Buying furniture at a discount will allow you to save money and still have a great looking house. All it takes is a little know how and some willingness to be patient enough to find a good deal.
Saving money on furniture is all about knowing the right places to buy. There are several different types of stores that can give you access to great furniture at a great price. The first place to try is a wholesale furniture distributor. You should be able to find one in your local yellow pages if you live in at least a mid-sized metropolitan area. These types of stores will give you wholesale prices for furniture. You may be purchasing furniture that has minor flaws or imperfections that are unnoticeable but lower the cost. Or you may be getting a good deal on a piece of furniture that is on closeout.
The next place to look is in classified ads (whether in your local paper or online, such as on Craigslist.org). You can also find yard sales in your local area where you can purchase furniture. Many people hold moving sales or clear out their home of old furniture all at once. You may be able to pick up an entire room set for a fraction of the original cost. In this case the furniture will be used, and may need to be cleaned, but the savings on the price may well be worth it. You can always get the furniture cleaned professionally, and you'll still probably end up spending less than you would if you paid for new furniture.

Unfinished furniture is another great route to go if you want to save money. You can buy bookshelves, tables, cabinets, chests of drawers and desks from an unfinished furniture store. Then you are free to stain or paint the pieces in any way you want. If you stain your own dining room set, you'll end up paying a lot less than you would to buy them new.
Even if you go to a furniture store, there are still ways to save money. If you know exactly what you want, then you can watch the ads in the newspaper and watch for a sale. When you are willing to wait a few weeks, you can often get the pieces you need at a deep discount. You can also keep your eyes open for going-out-of-business sales. These retailers will make you great deals on furniture in order to liquidate their inventory.
At furniture stores, also look for discount or closeout pieces. Just like with wholesale distributors, these pieces may have minor cosmetic flaws that you need to fix, or you may not notice them at all.
Finally, you can often get a good discount if you apply for a furniture stores credit card. When you apply and are approved, you'll normally receive 15 to 25 percent off of the purchase price. Before you make this step, make sure you know what the interest rate will be and pay off your balance in a timely manner.
You may also be able to save by shopping online. Sign up at your favorite retailer's website for promotional emails, and always look for online coupon codes before you buy.

Understanding Louis XV Antique Furniture

by Lee Rushworth

Period History:
Louis XV was the grandson of King Louis XIV and ruled France between 1715 and 1774. He is most commonly known for being one of France's most unpopular kings. During his reign, he managed to upset almost every social group in his country, yet surprisingly, in its own exclusive way, that segregation from his people has led to the Louis XV period antique furniture being some of the most sought after French furniture in the world.
Due to the unbalance of his country, the remaining Louis XV furniture is seen as a great treasure that heralds from a time of grave public unrest in France and symbolises the determination of its people as a whole but, in particular, in its furniture designers to continue to inspire, create and deliver a legacy of beautiful, intricate and detailed furniture which remains to this day a coveted style of design.
For all the things that went wrong with Louis XV's reign as King of France, one thing that is undeniable is the detailed quality of the furniture that rose from this dark time in France's history to reer a head of something quite the opposite, both elegant and flowing, in a time of bleak misery.
What Makes Louis XV Furniture Louis XV Furniture?
There are a number of tell-tale design characteristics that articulate this style of design. It is quite common to hear or see pieces of furniture incorrectly described as Louis XV, when in actual fact, they are Louis XIV. What separates the two is actually quite distinctive, and I'll list them below.
Louis XV Furniture is:
· Designed more curvaciously
· Free flowing forms and shapes
· Not made with straight lines, straight cuts or anything that looks angular
· Intricately carved and seemingly infinitely detailed
· Hand painted
· Shells tend to form the focul points of each design
· Symbolic of romance, sensuality and love
· Light and gracefull
Louis XV Furniture is not:
· Reliant on presence to state its claim, such as Gothic Furniture
· Made with straight cuts
· Big, bulky or angular
· Strong and masculine
· Machine painted
· Machine cut

You will find that Louis XIV furniture is quite the opposite in style to Louis XV, and where I've listed the points above that are not associated with Louis XV, you will tend to find these same characteristics present in Louis XIV furniture, for example, it will be more angular and less graceful, more inline with a masculine strength of style than a graceful, romantic wisp as seen in Louis XV furniture. It is a very common mistake, most probably due to the similarities in name, but it is vital when identifying your antique furniture to get the periods correct as unsurprisingly, it can cause chaos for the buyer at auction!
The next problem I tend to see quite often in my field is misselling replicas as originals.
Identifying Real Louis XV Antique Furniture
Yes, as sad as it is, there will always be those amongst us who feel the need to misrepresent antiques for personal gain by selling copies or replicas. When buying antiques, especially online, make sure to use a respected reseller, such as LJR Windwake & Sons, or a seller who specialises in your desired style, in this case, a Louis XV Antique Furniture Specialist. It is vitally important to be utterly scrupulous when buying antiques online at auction sites or dealers, but fortunately, I have some good tips on how to make sure that the piece of furniture you're buying is the real deal.
1. Ask for Details on How the Cupboard was Made
Make sure you ask the seller to explain to you how the piece was made, making sure to get him to decribe to you the joints in the wood. If they are visible, and keep in mind that the joinery of an 'antique' would not be machine cut but would in actual fact be hand cut, ask him to describe them to you. Chances are that hand cut joints will be rougher and perhaps not as exact as machine cut joints, which should be a good indication of originality and the antique you are buying is actually an 'antique' and not something that was knocked off a production line in ShenZhen, China, 2006.
The best way to find a cut is to remove a draw and have a close look at where the front and back of the drawer are fastened to the sides of the drawer. If a joint was made by hand, it would be dovetailed and have only a few dovetail joints, and they wouldn't be precisely even. If the dovetails are close together and precisely cut, it will have been machine-cut. Handmade dovetails almost always indicate a piece made before 1860.
2. Look for Imperfections such as Nicks and Cuts
Another great way to help identify the validity of an antique or hand-made piece of furniture would be to look closely for nicks and cuts on the back, sides and bottom of the draw. Nicks and cuts usually indicate a hand operated tool was used to plane, shave or cut the wood. Straight cuts, the kind you'd get from a straight saw, are also good signs whereas cuts that look circular in appearance mean that the cut was made with a circular saw, again not in use until after 1860.
3. Exact Symmetry? No way!
This is probably the easiest tell tale sign of machine made furniture compared to hand made. If something looks exactly symmetrical, chances are its been cut by machines, so make sure you request lots of pictures of the piece of furniture you're buying.
4. Ask for a Detailed Description of the Finish
The style of finish is also a great way of identifying the age of a piece of Louis XV. Certain finishes were in use in different periods which is an excellent way to identify the age of your antique furniture. For Louis XV, it should all be hand painted. Hand painting is often identifiable by slight imperfections in brush strokes or edges, although some of the finest Louis XV won't show any signs of human error, because the quality was so high, it is always advisable to ask for pictures of all paintwork, especially so for imperfections as these can actually ADD to the value of your furniture.
5. Make Sure the Seller Explains the type of Wood used in Manufacture
This is often a simple method of gauging an age because generally, as a rule of thumb, anything before 1700 was made from oak, 1700 onwards (our Louis XV era), mahogany and walnut were the choice woods. if its pine, it normally indicates an American furniture piece and is normally indicative of slightly cheaper works. The really valuable, old antique Louis XV treasures will be made from mahogany or walnut.
Conclusion
Always be careful when buying antique furniture but if you are thinking of buying, make sure you arm yourself with as much research as possible prior to attending auction houses. It is also very advisable to go to an auction with a particular object in mind. Visit the open days, make your notes, go home and research what you've seen and then attend the auctions with renewed knowledge about your purchase and always, always try to get as much information out of the seller as possible, whether buying online or at an auction house.

Placement of Beds From the Perspective of Science

by Eric Bledsoe

In modern society, people are striving to improve health and quality of life. Probably you have realized that good health and peaceful sleep are so much connected every day. A good night sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. It's been calculated that we spend about one third of life in sleeping. That is why your bed is the most used furniture at your home. Many people today are suffering from nostalgia and insomnia, a common but often overlooked condition that are mainly due to bad sleep quality. Superior mattress and bedding that provides both sleep comfort and back support can significantly contribute to having a deep refreshing sleep and waking up feel rested and energetic. However, the bed location is also a important factor for your sound sleep. From the perspective of science, the following are the top five tips of bed placement.
Do not place your bed underneath a window - If your bed is placed under a window, then you will feel unsafe and nervous while sleeping, especially in the windy or thunderstorm night. In the meantime, windows are commonly used for ventilation. Sleeping under a window can easily cause ill-health.
Be sure that there has no door or window along the head of your bed - Or else, guests or friends can see your bed when they are in the living room, which tends to disturb your sleep. Also, it looks unsightly to wear pajamas walking back and forth in the bedroom.

Do not place your bed opposite a mirror - When you wake up at night, you may be frightened by yourself reflected in the mirror. This is also a big taboo from the Feng Shui point of view.
Avoid a build up of debris under your bed - You will feel uncomfortable when you sleep above debris. At home, debris could breed bacteria because it stays damp and wet for a period of time.
From a scientific perspective, do not place your bed in west-east direction - The earth has a substantial magnetic field itself pointing almost north-south (Arctic and Antarctic). The magnetic field has the properties of attracting iron, cobalt and nickel, which can be found inside the human body. Iron is the main element of red blood. If your bed is placed in west-east direction, it will bring about the change in the distribution of the blood volume, especially in your brain. This will cause insomnia and seriously affect the quality of your sleep.

The Morris Chair - The First Recliner By William Morris

by Ariana Rodriguez

In the 1800's, William Morris was an influential English writer, a socialist reformer, an artist, a printer, and designer. Morris hoped to revive tapestry weaving as a fine art, along with the hand printing of books, furniture-making and other crafts. In 1861, he founded Morris & Co., which was made up of decorators, architects, and artists. This group created the first reclining chair for Morris, and named it the Morris chair, an item that has remained popular to this day.
He was born in Walthamstow, Essex on March 24, 1834. After graduating from Exeter College in Oxford, Morris originally intended to take religious orders, but after readings criticisms by socialists Thomas Carlyle, Charles Kingsley and John Ruskin, he reconsidered joining the Church and instead devoted his life to art.
This company was best known for its stained glass which can be found in churches throughout Britain. The first Morris Chair was not designed by William Morris, but was created by Morris & Co. around 1866. It featured ebonized oak with cushioned armrests and spindles that looked more like strings of beads.

The design of a Morris Chair features a seat with a reclining back and high armrests, which give the chair an authentic look. Many modifications have been made to the original design since it's introduction until this day. While the first design looked to have more of a Victorian influence, it is best known as part of the Arts & Crafts style. This is due to the revisions made by Gustav Stickley who later updated and further popularized the design. Modern manufacturers made further modifications eventually leading up to modern recliners, like those sold by LazyBoy.
William Morris entered national politics in 1876. His first position was as a treasurer of the Eastern Question Association and then also held the same position under the National Liberal League and the Radical Union. After becoming disillusioned with the Liberals, Morris joined the Socialist Democratic Federation. However, after disagreeing with the leader, H.M. Hyndman, he formed the Socialist League and later the Hammersmith Socialist Society. He became a very active propagandist for the socialist cause, giving hundreds of lectures and speeches throughout the country. After the socialist movement died down, his organization was passed onto a group of anarchists and Morris formally withdrew in 1890.
Morris then went on to produce improved printing and book design when he founded the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith, London in 1891. From the selection of paper and ink to his overall integration of type and decorations on a page, his traditional methods of printing and craftsmanship also ran in line with the Arts & Crafts movement. His Kelmscott House in Hammersmith was his last home. Morris died there on October 3, 1896.
To this day, the ideas and work of William Morris are actively being preserved by Morris Societies in Britain, the U.S. and Canada. His influence is also ubiquitous in homes around the world through interiors and architecture. Many companies continue to sell Arts & Crafts-style furniture. In addition, the Morris Chair will always be the noble ancestor of the modern-day recliner.

How to Know When Furniture is Worth Saving

by Ryan Page

Are you moving? Just need to clean out that basement? Maybe you're looking to refinish an old piece of furniture that's been stored in the garage and you're wondering if it's worth it? Perhaps your favorite chair is starting to rip and fade and you're debating whether you should bother reupholstering it or just replace it. Keep reading to learn exactly how to know when furniture is worth saving.
How Good is the Skeleton?
The quality of most furniture can be gauged by its frame or skeleton. Is it made of flimsy particle board that's glued together, or rather strong, solid wood that's well-jointed and structurally sound? Does it look durable, or like it might break at any second?
Remember, everything from cushions to upholstery to springs can all be replaced at one point, but you simply can't polish something that is fundamentally junk. So, look for a piece of furniture that has a good, sound foundation.
How Easy is it to Fix?

If a piece is going to take months of sanding and repairing, it may not be the project for you. While you may enjoy taking a large-scale furniture project on as part of a hobby, it simply might not be worth it if you don't enjoy the repair process. Instead, look for a piece that's easier to fix.
Is it Dated?
While it's true that you can't get rid of a classic piece, it's also true that you can't update something that's too dated. For example, unless you're going for a retro look, not much can be done for a linoleum and aluminum table.
Instead, look for pieces that have a classic and timeless look which won't go out-of-date. Again, remember that you can always update the upholstery or the fabric without too much expense.
Does it Have some Sentimental Value?
If the furniture has sentimental value, you may not want to replace it at all. For example, your mother's old rocking chair, a cherished wedding present or a favorite chair are all items that are worth preserving, no matter what the cost.
For heirloom items, always treat them with care and maintain them properly to ensure they enjoy a long life with your family for decades to come.
Essentially, the answer to how to know when furniture is worth saving is in asking yourself how good the skeleton is, how easy it is to fix, whether the piece is dated and if it has sentimental value. By evaluating the piece with those 4 questions, you'll know when to give the furniture that extra life-preserving effort.

Wood Console Tables - Some Have Beautiful Inlays

by Jennifer Akre

Not all wood console tables are just simple wooden tables with legs and a drawer or shelf. Indeed, some wood console tables are much fancier, even rivaling their ritzy furniture siblings made of marble and other luxurious materials. By using exotic woods or inlays, a wood console table can take on an air of luxury and sophistication.
You may not have known what they were called but inlays are designs made in the wood of the table. Generally inlays are made of other woods and/or metal inset into a table top surface. Picture a beautiful cherry wood console table that instead of a solid cherry top has a design set in made of metal. It could be a flowery or gothic design, or something more customized, such as a monogram. This is the idea behind the simpler metal inlay.
Taking things a step further is a wood and metal inlay. In this case it is not only metal that a groove is cut for in the wood. Instead a whole area of the top of the cherry wood console table is carved out, and other exotic wood pieces and metal lines are placed together to create an exquisite design. You can find a number of wood console tables on the market that already have any number of beautiful designs created in them, or look to have your own made, that suits your style and preferences.

From time to time, other unique items are also used in making inlay wood console tables. If you are creating a tropical paradise in your home, it may be possible to find a wood console table that has shells and other beach items inlayed into the surface.
Inlayed wood console tables ask to be shown off and bragged about, which won't be a problem as people will no doubt gawk and laud them when they see them. Generally when it comes to decorating, you won't put too much on top of an inlayed wood console table. You can still use the drawer and shelves underneath for storage, but you will probably want to keep the top clear, so people can see it's beauty. The exception may be a lamp you can place on the corner of the tabletop to illuminate the inlay.
Inlays are also a way to really appreciate a piece of furniture. When you order a piece, especially with custom inlays, you know that item is going to be created with love, from the hands of a master at his craft. It will be a unique, one of a kind, piece that will add to your home for the years to come.
Many people look at these kinds of wood console tables as an heirloom piece for the family. They want the beauty of the craftsmanship to be passed on for years to come. In this case, while you could just settle for the design you have already chosen for the table, you could also take things one step further and have some of the metal inlay work engraved with a family name, date, or something else that will make it more meaningful to future generations.

Choosing Cherry Dining Chairs

by C Hessong

They are always under you, supporting you in comfort during your meal, but many people fail to appreciate the beauty seen in finely crafted cherry dining chairs. These surround a table and provide you and your guests the seating required for any casual weekend brunch or formal holiday dinner. Your choice of cherry dining chairs will help to mold the overall appearance of your dining room decorating theme. That is why proper selection of these furnishings is important to the look of your home.
We offer a wide range of products which allows you to mix and match the chairs for your dining room. Believe it or not, but when you begin to look for a cherry dining chair, you will find many choices. Not only are there dozens of different design styles, but there are also many forms for chairs. You might need side cherry chairs to go along the long edges of your table. These differ from the dining room cherry arm chairs which are typically placed at the head and foot (the narrow ends) of the table. Arm chairs are slightly wider in many cases, and they are furnished with arm rests, whereas side chairs do not have arm rests. This allows for you to have two or three cherry dining side chairs along the longer sides of your table without making your guests feel crowded. If you put arm chairs there instead, there would not be enough room for comfort.

Other options include benches and bar stools. Benches make the perfect casual addition to a breakfast table, and bar stools are natural accompaniments to pub tables. Whatever type of cherry dining chair you need, you will be sure to find it here.
Before you make your choice, you will need to be sure that you have enough room around your table. Carefully measure out the alloted space in your dining room. You will also need to take into consideration the length and width of your table. You do not want to have your cherry dining chairs crowded around the table, or lack the room for the number of seats you need.
If you are not sure about which modern cherry dining chairs are best for you, then take a look around the selections in the Internet furniture stores. You should be able to access customer service while you are on line. This can be through the phone, email, or in a live chat room. In order to protect your information, the chat room should be secured and encrypted. You will know that the chat is secured because you will see a closed lock in the corner of your browser window. This means that the information is encoded in such a way that only you and our customer service representative will know what is being sent.

Saving Money with Affordable Furniture

by Ben Weissman

Are you in need of new furniture but are on a tight budget and can't afford to blow a lot of money on your new furnishings? You've probably been looking at discount metal beds and other such pieces that seem like a solution for the pocketbook. However, you need to be careful when you search for discount furniture because not everything is the great deal that it seems to be. There are ways to save money and still get high quality furniture, especially when you are shopping brands like Hillsdale Furniture, a company that uses the highest quality materials to build their wares and offers affordable options to consumers.
Whether looking for affordable bedroom furniture or barstools, you'll find what you need at a price you can handle with Hillsdale. They offer items ranging from children's bedrooms to kitchen spaces and specialty items. As you begin your search for the furniture you want, this is the first place you should look.
You'll find items like discount platform beds, which are all the craze right now in bedroom design. A platform bed is basically a very minimalistic design that is just a platform upon which you would add your mattress. It is sometimes lifted high off the ground and others low to the floor, almost like an earthy bed. Headboards are usually sold separately so that you can be as extravagant as you wish in the headboard design to luxuriate your simple bedding. With a platform bed, you can really design without a headboard if you like.

If you are looking to furnish your child's room, beware of some affordable kids' beds, since you need to be first concerned with your child's safety. Make sure the design is sturdy and that there are no sharp edges or rough corners on which your child can be injured. Safety should always come before price, but you can find pieces that accommodate both needs.
Even if you are simply looking to add an entertainment area to your living room, you don't have to spend extravagantly. You can purchase discount bar stools and a small indoor bar (or even build your own) for a reasonable price. If you can't afford it all at once, purchase piece by piece; don't charge it - save up for it. You'll be glad you did when you've had the delayed gratification and are staring your prize in the face.

Ben Weissman writes articles about using Metal Beds and Discount Bedroom Furniture to Design Your Home. You'll find more Decorating Ideas at http://www.Home-and-Bedroom.com - Make your bedroom into a personal retreat!

Tempur-pedic Vs Sleep Number - Which Bed Is Better?

by Nick Robinson

The TV commercials for them seem to run day and night. And they are currently the buzz among mattress shoppers.
I'm referring, of course, to the Sleep Number bed and the Tempur-pedic bed.
Is one better than the other? To help find an answer, I evaluate the two beds by several important criteria below and indicate which is better.
Comfort
Both beds are considered comfortable by the clear majority of their owners, according to extensive research I've conducted. Tempur-pedic is mainly comfortable because the memory foam reduces pressure points on your body. And the Sleep Number is mainly comfortable because it lets you adjust the firmness level to your preference. Advantage: Tie

Odor
Many new mattress owners complain that their mattress gives off a smell for a while initially. This is usually the result of the manufacturing or packaging process. While Sleep Number has some complaints from owners about odor, Tempur-pedic clearly has more. Advantage: Sleep Number
Price
Both beds can cost many thousands of dollars, and owners often complain about the price. On average, however, Tempur-pedic tends to be more expensive. Advantage: Sleep Number
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer has to do with the amount of movement you can feel when laying on the bed. For example, a bed with low motion transfer will allow one person to move on the bed without another person on the bed noticing it. Both Sleep Number and Tempur-pedic do admirably in this area, but Tempur-pedic has less motion transfer properties. Advantage: Tempur-pedic
Suitable for Love Making
Owners of both beds have some complaints in this area. However, some also praise the beds for their suitability for love making. Overall, however, the Sleep Number bed has fewer comments one way or the other on this issue. Advantage: Sleep Number

Memory Foam - Find The Best Memory Foam Mattress

by Jen Carter

Memory foam, or visco-elastic polyurethane foam, is made from the same material used in thermal insulation. The other chemicals that are used in the production of memory foam are a closely guarded secret. Chemists have created many combinations of chemicals, resulting in various densities of memory foam. Each kind is slightly different, but they all share the same astonishing properties.
On a regular mattress, metal springs keep your body from falling through. They flex under your body's weight, holding you up. But memory foam doesn't respond to weight as much as heat. We all know that our bodies are not flat. There are hollows at the small of the back, the neck and the knees. When we lie down on a traditional mattress, the springs touch the rest of the body, but can't reach these spots, leaving them unsupported . When we lie on a memory foam mattress, something very different happens.

The foam warms where your body touches it: the head, shoulders, hips and feet. The warm portions of the mattress become softer, letting these parts of the body sink slightly. Amazingly, the other parts of the memory foam mattress don't change. They can then touch the hollow parts of the body that would otherwise be left unsupported. Because of the uneven heat, the mattress conforms to the exact shape of the body.
Dust mites don't like memory foam as much as we do. In fact, they find the material very difficult to live on. That is a breath of fresh air for anyone who suffers from indoor allergies or breathing problems that might be worsened by mites. Although products vary from company to company, most memory foam mattresses are also treated with an antimicrobial solution. This prevents germs from living on the mattress as well as on pillows, toppers or pads.
These type of mattresses are also more durable than traditional spring mattresses. Springs that flex every night eventually bend beyond their capability. The result is a mattress that sags in the middle, giving even less support. Memory foam doesn't wear out because it changes chemically, not mechanically. There are no moving parts to break or bend, only the natural properties of the foam.
With benefits like these, how could I resist? Suddenly, my joint pain is gone. My muscles don't have to work all night to support my neck and back. The mattress does it for me. I don't find myself waking up to toss and turn, searching for a more comfortable place. Most importantly, I'm able to live pain-free without turning to medications. I owe it all to my memory foam mattress, its heat-sensitive formulation, and the scientists who brought this technology to the world.

Choosing And Placing Your Living Room Sofa

by Albert Lee

Choosing a sofa may seem like a breeze for some while others find it a very tedious job. You first need to know that the sofa should look right in the spot you assigned for it. It also should be functional and convenient enough for use and maintenance. There are a few guidelines you need to follow in order to have the perfect sofa for your living room.
What size do you need? Some big sofas may look majestic but your living room might be a bit small to accommodate it well. Very large sofas can overwhelm small living rooms ruining symmetry. The same goes for very small sized sofas. You may need to add another one to compensate for the extra space or the room will look rather empty. Measure the dimensions of your living room first then compare these with the width and height of the sofa you're eyeing on.

What color do you want? Some trendy sofas may be sporting very bright colors that go out of season fast. This can cost you a lot of extra expenses if you plan to change covers or buy another one that fits the standard. It is better to stick with neutral colors like white, black, brown or beige then accentuate with pillows having a variety of patterns and colors. You will be able to get the look you want by simply changing the accents. You also need to check the color of your room if the sofa will compliment it well. Aim for colors that provide a warm contrast to the room.
What style is good for you? Your sofa needs to fit well into the overall theme of your living room. Oriental or Victorian sofas look very stylish and elegant but may not look as great when placed in contemporary style rooms. You may have the room determine what kind of sofa you need or vice-versa. Observe the material and determine whether you prefer leather, cotton, silk, etc. The fabric should be very comfortable with the frame creating a nice blend. Check the padding and foam as well as the armrest if everything is just right for rest and relaxation.

4 Killer Factors to Note When Buying Your Coffee Table

by Xu Zhenyao

1. Style - Does it strike a First Impact?
When you go for a blind date, you often want to give your best for the other person. It goes the same for making a purchase for your very own coffee table. Very often, when a customer makes a purchase, the FIRST impression always counts.
A lot of questions should appear in your head when you first see that coffee table. You are considering whether it meets your type of lifestyle, whether it fits your current ambience/style in your living room, or does it simply fit the image you want to portray to the visitors to your house? Can I get a coffee table somewhere else at a lower price? Somehow or rather, all that questions does not really matter after a fraction of a second.
2. Price - Is it worth your money?
Besides the very important factor of style, one of the other major killer factor that people pay attention to when buying a coffee table is PRICE. You must ask yourself these questions. Do I really need that coffee table? Can I get a discount if I purchase at the end of the year? Should I wait a while longer? Is it a need or a simply a want? When making a purchase, people often want to justify the reason or basis for purchasing the product. In fact, on many occasions, there might not be a compelling reason. You just FEEL like buying that particular coffee table. This is simply so because I like it and I want to place it in my living room.

3. Quality - A symbol of Eternality?
This factor seems to be on the rage these days. You always see this factor popping up in surveys. The consumers always expect quality from manufacturers. Does this signify high value over lower price? Or does it simply mean having quality to meet the standard of you? I guess no one would like to buy a coffee table back home and realize that there are termites hiding inside the legs of the table. Consumers expect top graded materials at a fraction of the cost.
A company should not just employ sales personnel who can give a great sales pitch. It just destroys the whole consumer experience. They should be exploring the possibility, options or range of products that they have. It should not be pushing you and asking you to put a signature on the check.
4. Service - Do the sales people smile?
The last aspect is what I would like to emphasize. Have you gone to a shop with sales man and woman who behave like robots? Or do they look like they have not gotten their pay checks for half a year? I have. I simply leave the shop. Imagine walking to a shop with friendly and pleasant sales people.
The all important cliché , Welcome, How can I help you? That is not the end. Add a great price, superb quality, fabulous style to the equation coupled with fantastic service. When looking for your coffee table, the company should be willing to explain the features and benefits of their coffee table to you. What is just so unique about their coffee table?

People Are Becoming Aware Of Eco Friendly Furniture

by Kristen Sky

Do you really need to buy eco-friendly outdoor furniture? Is there any real advantage over any other furniture available at my local store?
Around the world, as people become more aware of the serious environmental problems affecting everyone, many are burying their heads in the sand and hoping it will all go away. For others there is no avoiding this problem, and large numbers of ordinary people are turning to environmentally friendly products to use in their everyday lives.
These people are trying to make small but significant changes in the way they look at their everyday lives, and the items they purchase, with a view to not only cost and quality, but also how the manufacture, and use of these products impact the world at large.

Modern eco-friendly furniture is a small but significant part of this new environmentally conscious attitude towards the items that we buy for our homes. Many people these days want to be able to make an informed decision with regard to how an item was produced in relation to this environmental impact.
Modern eco friendly furniture will not in itself save the planet, but with the threat of global warming it is important to try wherever possible, to make environmentally friendly decisions with regard to any home decor buys.
Eco friendly outdoor furniture is made from renewable and nontoxic materials and is made with processors that do not cause environmental damage.
For example, many pieces of modern eco friendly furniture are made from wood; well you wouldn't think that was very environmentally friendly, cutting down trees. But as opposed to regular wood furniture found in your local store, modern eco friendly furniture is made from timber produced by certified wood harvesting sites.
These sites are closely monitored to ensure the trees are grown specifically for harvesting and after the mature trees are cut down they are replaced at the same time by planting saplings. In addition, developments in manufacturing methods mean that a significant proportion of 'wooden' eco friendly outdoor furniture is not actually made from wood; it is produced from bamboo, which grows at a fast rate and is easily replenished.
By making a conscious decision to buy this 'eco friendly' outdoor furniture, you can help to prevent deforestation, because no virgin forest is involved in its manufacture. Unlike many overpriced environmentally friendly products, this eco-friendly outdoor furniture has a comparable price to regular outdoor furniture.
There is an excellent choice of styles available from the traditional to the ultramodern, there is a wide choice of quality furniture available, and if there is not a store near your home it is easy to order online.

Moroccan Lanterns - The Mystery of Moroccan Furniture

by Adeal Benhayoun

In a perfect world, you would be in your Mediterranean parlor, reclining on a luxuriously upholstered ottoman with a warm bowl of harira soup. At this moment, however, the rich comforts of Moroccan furniture seem impossibly far away. Instead you find yourself walking through the wet, blustery chill of a February morning at an hour so early that it still feels like yesterday. Gone are the lush fabrics, bold colors, and cinnamon earth tones of Moroccan decor- they have been replaced by the concrete reality of the surrounding metropolis. You clutch your overcoat against your chest, hoping to ward away the worst of the sleet until you reach your first destination - the bus stop. As you get off the bus, you see the glowing light of Moroccan lanterns shining. Each step drags you further and further from your treasured Moroccan furniture. But you have planned for this; the vision of your Mediterranean parlor will sustain you throughout the day until you can return to its welcoming mirth.

The bus is drawing near, and you wonder if you will encounter the surly bus driver today. With bated breath, you climb aboard and-- the surly driver greets you with a dismissive snort. But you aren't even there. The bus has already morphed into the Mediterranean parlor, Moroccan lanterns are everywhere glowing their magical flare; the stiff bucket seats have been replaced by the forgiving cushion of your favorite ottoman, its refined silken upholstery buffering you against the onslaughts of a callous society. The din of cell phones and the steady groan of the city melt away as you remember the quiet solace found only in your own Moroccan furniture.
This is your stop. A hydraulic sigh accompanies your leap from the bus steps, and you take to the sidewalk as if in a trance. And still the visions of Moroccan furniture and the shining Moroccan lanterns captivate your imagination. Smoke from a nearby ventilation pipe reminds you of a steaming cup of mint tea. Furniture shop windows try to lure you from your daydream with promises of modern creature comforts, but you remain unswayed. Beneath your feet, the cement gives way to the provocative fractals of a Moroccan tile floor; the hardened concrete path appears as the luxurious hand-made Berber carpet that adorns the floor of your Mediterranean parlor. And within the icy puddles, you can see the reflection of an elaborately decorated Moroccan ceiling above you. In this world, you may walk between the raindrops, unscathed by the neon lights that buzz cynically overhead; and in their place, you see only the romantic glow of hand-wrought Moroccan lanterns.
You have finally arrived at the office where you have reached countless compromises in the past. The revolving door of the building has little to offer you in comparison to the intricately engraved entrance to your Mediterranean parlor. In Morocco, the doors are designed to welcome guests, enticing them with grace and artistry. But here-- in the real world-- the doors seem to throw you out as soon as they invite you in. Your body may enter here, but your mind will remain transfixed with the exotic ambiance of Moroccan decor. Co-workers greet you with bowed heads and grave countenances; and you realize that many of them will live their entire lives without ever having glimpsed the subtle beauty of Moroccan furniture.
Entering the board room, you take your seat at an elongated table. The faces around you look bored. For them, all tables are rectangular-- or square. They have never seen a hexagonal table with fascinating Moorish designs and a hand-carved facade; that much is clear from their expressions. On your own face, there is a look of total contentment. The Moroccan furniture has pulled you through the worst of another day, thanks to your own sense of style and taste. Now you are curled up in your favorite ottoman, sipping your bowl of harira soup. Board meetings are so much better this way. And no one suspects that you aren't even there.

Mattress Buying At It's Best

by Craig Thornburrow

Have you been sleeping on the same mattress for more than 10 years? Do you have a lot of back pain? Well your mattress could be the culprit of your pain. You need to go shopping! Below are a few tips that might help you while shopping for a new mattress.
When you go mattress buying you need to find the mattress that best fits you and what you are comfortable on. Your comfort is what is most important. If you are comfortable you will relax and get a good night sleep but if you are not comfortable you will toss and turn all night long resulting in a hurting back in the morning.
First you must decide if you want a firm mattress meaning a mattress that will not give. A plush mattress is softer than firm mattress and is a great middle of the road mattress. A plush mattress can be very comfy but not to where you sink into the mattress. A pillow top mattress is one that you sink deep into. When you go to the store lay down on each type of mattress that they have to get an idea what it feels like. Make your choice after trying the mattress out. Once you have the mattress at home you need to take good care of it.

There are several ways to take care of your mattress so that you can have that mattress for years. First of all you need to put a protective pad on the mattress to keep it clean and free of stains. Putting a waterproof pad on your mattress can help protect it from children and pets. You should air out you mattress for a day or so once at least month to help odors from settling in. Never clean your mattress with anything but a vacuum cleaner unless you have to tackle a stain. Use mild soap and cold water on stains. Never walk, jump or fold your mattress, this will cause damage to the mattress as well as a possible injury to you.
Mattress buying can be fun yet very important to your body. Find the right mattress for you and take care of it so that you have it for many years to come. There is nothing more important after a hard day of life laying down in a comfortable bed and getting a good night sleep. Your body, mind and soul will thank you.

Now Your Child Can Have A Stimulating Environment With Space Saving Kid Furniture

by Michael Urmann

Don't you wish you could make the perfect bedroom for your child? A stimulating environment encourages exploration and play that can help your child grow from a helpless little toddler into a confident and emotionally strong youngster. You have that chance to create this kind of healthful environment when you set out to furnish your child's bedroom. I would like to offer some ideas that could help you acheive this.
Bedroom furniture should be a combination of fantasy and reality. For very young children, the difference between the two is a fine line which you can make the most of. A combination of small, kid sized furniture and regular sized furniture is manageable to a young mind. Children love a place that is sized for them and they where they are not always reminded of being little. Miniature foam sofas and chairs are available. These come in colorful, imaginative prints and are not overly expensive. An added benefit is some of these open out into an off-the-floor cozy bed for your child's "sleep-over" friends. Your child can move and rearrange these all by themselves because they are so light weight. Usually stressful on parents, sleepovers will be easier and more fun filled if you are prepared with appropriate bedding beforehand. There are many types of fold-out form furniture - foam loungers, foam sofa-sleepers, and futons that already on a moments notice.

Every one loves a rocking chair, especially mom and dad. Beanbag chairs and loungers are more suitable for children - comfortable and sized for them. Beanbags will conform to a child's body shape as they sit in it, giving support to the lower back, shoulders, and arms. You can purchase beanbag chairs and couches in many styles, as well as stimulating colors, numerous textures, and zillions of prints. There are stars and moon patterns, or wild animal designs. Others come in lime green and other bright colors, while some have a wet-look vinyl cover or a furry cover. Some beanbags are even shaped like a horse or elephant. My children and grandchildren love these animal character beanbags.
Because they are so lightweight, beanbags and foam furniture can easily move them around any way they they wish. Such independence!! Which ever you choose, beanbags or foam furniture, be sure to purchase the type with hidden, cloth-covered zippers that make it easy to remove the cover for washing. Many of the zippers available are safety zippers that stay shut and keep the beans inside.
The more open floor space in a child's room the better. This is where they will make their pretend world, spreading out their toys, dumping Legos, having tea parties with their stuffy animals and friends. They will arrange and rearrange this world everyday. But making this floor space open and useful can be difficult when the youngest child gets the smallest bedroom. Multipurpose furniture that can change shapes for different needs will be a wise investment for smart parents.
I found a great solution to this space problem with my own children - futons. A futon is a comfortable and lightweight couch for sitting during the day - a place you child and their will sit and chatter, or place you and your child to sit and cuddle while reading a book together. At night, they magically become a comfortable bed, off the floor, for your child's overnight guests. Kid futons are relatively inexpensive because there is no need to purchase a separate mattress.
Sitting with your child and reading to them has been shown to be one of the best things you can do with your child. This is a quite time, a time for focusing, relaxing, and relating to each other and to the characters you are reading about in the book. This is the time of day for drawing out life's lessons. Reading out loud to your son or daughter stimulates their imagination, expands their vocabulary, and starts them on a life long journey of reading on their own. Getting kids to bed is much easier if they have just been reading than if they have been watching TV or engaged in other high energy or emotion activity. Tip: leave the TV and computer in family areas where you can monitor what they watch and play, not in the child's bedroom.
After reading and its time for sleep, the futon couch will unfold into a cozy and comfortable bed. It is much easier for a child to relax and go to sleep after just having had a loving time reading with mom or dad than one who just watched a fast paced TV program. The next morning, the child's futon bed easily folds back into being a futon couch and again freeing up all the valuable floor space, allowing your child to once again create their imaginary world all day long.
As your child grows the type of furniture that will be useful for your child will change. Bunk beds or futon bunk beds are great space savers of that precious floor space. Kids can climb on bunk beds, practicing these skills in a safe environment. In pre-teen years, when kids learn to bond with friends outside the family, the sleep-over stage reach it peak, as often as once a weekend. Bunk beds are once again a space saving piece of furniture. And this is the age when kids no longer really want to sleep on the floor. Futon bunk beds combine a single sized bed on the top and couch on the bottom that folds into a double bed when needed. Rising above the world of disarray and clutter (if you have a son), the futon bunk bed is the ultimate space-save for a child's bedroom. A Bunk bed and especially a futon bunk bed will be a useful and satisfying investment in your children.

Dr. Michael Urmann writes for http://FutonsAndBeanBags.com which offers at highly discounted prices a full range of futon products, including kid futons, bunk futons, foam furniture, and beanbags.

What to Know Before Going Into a Bed Mattress Store

by Hayden Madisson

Mattress shopping can be time-consuming. Looking for a mattress to suit your needs may take patience, too. One should know pretty well the kind of mattress he or she needs in accordance, of course, to the individual's budget limit.
For a smoother mattress shopping, here are some things to consider before stepping in to a bed mattress store:
- Take some time to think. Before indulging yourself in a "mattress shopping mode" at your favorite bed mattress store, try to introspect and then decide - is it really time to change your old mattress with a new one? Just like other furniture and appliances at home, mattresses also undergo aging which will lead to its incapability in meeting your needs.
When do you buy a new mattress?
- if you are not sleeping as comfortably as you were previous years ago - your old mattress is already worn out and sagging - your mattress is giving you more body aches and tired muscles after a long sleep, instead of providing you comfort - your mattress does not fit you anymore. There are times when people grow, both in age and body built, that they do no longer be able to fit comfortably with their mattress. - change of lifestyle. A sudden change in your status, such as getting married, requires someone to shift to another type of mattress.

It is best to set expectations of the mattress that you want before buying one. Expectations would involve the quality of the mattress as well as the kind of customer service one will receive upon going to a bed mattress store.
Furthermore, one should also choose a mattress that suits well to the available space of the bedroom where it will be placed. A single size bed mattress, for example, is ideal for rooms that have limited space.
Quality
Make sure your mattress can withstand all the pressure and tension it has to endure from its users. Also, the mattress should be able to conform with the dimensional size of the bed frame as well as the temperature condition of the room where the mattress will be placed.
A good mattress should be comfortable to sleep on. A memory foam mattress, for example, is known for its light characteristics as it conforms flexibly to the body position of the one sleeping on it. This characteristic gives a "cradle-like" feeling as it relieves pressure from the body of the sleeper, particularly on the areas of the shoulders, hips and back. A good quality of mattress should also be hypo-allergenic to prevent dust mites from inhabiting your mattress, giving it a fresh and healthy environment.
Good Customer Service
You can tell from store personnels if you're in a store with good service or not. A bed mattress store should have sales persons who have wide knowledge on the mattresses (or other bed products) their stores are selling. A good bed mattress store should have some people around the store who can guide pretty well their consumers through the often confusing wide array of available mattresses to choose from. If you find their sales persons not well-educated on the products their stores are selling and are giving you more confusion than guidance, then venture out to another bed mattress store where you will be more comfortable to ask around.
A good customer service is one that deals with their clients honestly. More often than not, mattress dealers mislead their buyers through series of mattress sales just to attract their buyers in purchasing their products.
Buy from a reputable bed mattress store. This kind of store has established already a good name through its durable and high quality mattresses as well as excellent customer service. The reputation of a bed mattress store can be checked upon through testimonials of previous clients and on mattress reviews that can be found mostly in the internet.
Inquire about the delivery service. This includes fast delivery and friendly delivery crew.
- Test the new mattress that you want. This is often the case if someone do the canvassing in the internet and was not really able to personally touch (or feel) the mattress.
It is advisable to check on the mattress and lie down on it so that one can have a personal feel of the mattress, and test its comfort.
